Has anyone else's pet eaten poisonous plants before? (see details)
I broke off a sprig of azaleas yesterday while I was out and stuck it in my handbag. I forgot to throw it out, and today I woke up to a sprig with no azaleas or leaves on it. My heart sunk when I realized that one of the younger cats had eaten the flora off of the sprig. I couldn’t figure out which cat had eaten them. They were all acting perfectly normal. I watched them for hours and googled the subject, getting many different opinions on how toxic azaleas are to cats. I called Vet ERs and talked to the doctors who told me I would have to pay today (I am broke) if I brought the cat in. No payment plan could be arranged. Ooookaaaaay…..
Finally about 5 hours after eating the blooms, my cat Sweetness puked them up. There, I knew who ate them. A few hours later, she had diarrhea, and both times I saw all the roughage of the petals, leaves (which weren’t chewed much), and the stamens. So there, the stuff is out. But what she absorbed into her bloodstream I don’t know. Right now, she is sleeping and I keep giving her droppers of water every 15 minutes to help flush her blood. I wake her up and play string with her every 15 also. From what I have read the major effects should be through by about 8 tomorrow morning, so I will be constantly monitoring her.
Has anyone else’s pet eaten some sort of poisonous flora, and how did they react? How did you handle it?
