Would it be better for my son to take his PSAT during his sophomore or junior year in high school?

I am wondering if my son should take his PSAT in his sophomore or junior year. I believe I took mine as a sophomore. How will it impact his ability to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship? Thanks!
