What is the best jewelry metal for someone allergic to nickel?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) December 14th, 2014

My husband is having issues with his wedding band. It’s tungsten carbide and is supposed to have a very low amount of nickel, however he’s having some sort of allergic reaction underneath his ring. It’s itchy, red, and flaking. The jeweler said it could be from soap and water being trapped under the ring and irritating his skin. So he has been very careful about removing the ring while washing his hands and fully drying his skin before replacing the ring. He doesn’t wear it during showers or even to bed. He let it heal completely from the first reaction but as soon as he put it back on, it was reacting again with his skin. So what are his options? What is the best metal for this allergy?

Gold. Gold is the least reactive metal with skin. My sister gets rashes from silver, and i know lots of people who get a rash from copper.

A gold wedding band isn’t that expensive, really.

Titanium or Platinum

There are some great ceramic rings available. They look like tungsten and are “safe” like tungsten also. If your finger swells with the ring on like tungsten ceramic can be broken off with a pair of pliers unlike other metals like titanium.

Both Titanium and surgical stainless steel are used for piercing jewelry as they’re considered the least reactive.

Great ideas – gold, titanium, platinum, stainless. Stuff that is commonly used in prosthetics.

Tungsten carbide rings are usually made of tungsten carbide particles held together with nickel. I have one, and it seems heavy and indestructible. Luckily I am not allergic to nickel. I think he will have to go get a ring of a different material.

Here is a cool stainless ring: http://www.kinektdesign.com/product-gear-ring.php
