IPad: Lost all photos after 8.3 update restore. Gutted.Details follow. Help?

Asked by DarlingRhadamanthus (11273points) May 1st, 2015

First of all, thank you. This is my first posting in a long absence. So much has happened. Too much for this posting. I see a lot of the old gang on here and lots of newbies…:) Missed you. Hope you have been well….on to the matter at hand…

Here is the problem:

I updated IPad 4 with 8.3 a few days ago. When I did this, my IPad started to freeze and then crash. I would start it up and it would happen again. In the years I have owned it, it never had problems till 8.3.

I called Apple Support and they verified that I had the correct number of photos on ICloud before the restore started. There were about 3,500 images, graphics, videos, etc in my Photo Library on my IPad. So, all of these were on the ICloud according to Apple.

I did the restore using ITunes from a PC. The IPad is now working, but the only images that came back were 53 images out of all those 3,000!

I spoke with another representative at Apple who could not find them on I Cloud. Nothing except the 53 images. Despite the fact that they said they were on there before the restore…argh.

Yet, I can see the huge image GB’s on my IPad. I asked them how to access these, and got no answer. They still were trying to find them on the Cloud. The photos are on my IPad Photo Library as it states in “Usage” (if not on the cloud) but I cannot seem to access them. The only icon on the desktop of my IPad is the multi-coloured one. There is no camera roll filled with photos and images as before. But they are on my IPad…on the drive (?) as the GB’s are registering.

Does anyone have any idea how to find my Photo Library somewhere? On the Cloud or how to access my Photo Library that is now on my IPad (it was backed up) and seemingly inaccessible?

Hope this makes sense. A lot of my work was on there and any information would be very, very appreciated. I am not tech sa v v y so if you answer, be gentle.

Thank you very much again.

And by the way…do not update to 8.3…yikes. Wait for something more stable. What a mess.

I updated to 8.3 a couple of weeks ago with no problems.
If you have ever connected your iPad to a PC or Mac using iTunes you may be able to find your hidden pictures. If not it may be worth trying anyway. Make sure the version of iTunes you use is the latest.

@DarlingRhadamanthus so good to see you! I can’t help though, so I will probably get modded.
Good luck (I’ll share this with ragingloli.)

Hi, @Cosmos…I did have all the updates. Used a PC to restore using ITunes as instructed by Apple techies. Thanks for the response. Not quite sure what happened. Still keeping hope alive!

Thanks for the posting @Dutchess_III…good to hear from you! You brightened my day! :)

Did the Apple techies tell you to Sync all devices using iTunes?

I’ve noticed that sometimes things improve after updating my Apple ID profile.

I lost all my photos when I bought an iPhone and they tried to transfer everything from my android to my iPhone. The salespeople were like, “too bad, sorry.” My husband was no help. I went back to the store the next day and a different sales person took pity on me, googled, and got back everything in my old phone, including photos I am pretty sure I had deleted. I moved them all to a small hard external drive thingy.

I am no help in telling how to restore the photos, but I’m posting here to say don’t give up to fast in trying to get the photos back.
