How do I get my email to work (Windows Mail -- mine's Bellsouth.net)

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) August 28th, 2015

I have not been able to get my email to work for four days—it keeps throwing up a Windows Security box asking for my user name and password (which, incidentally, have not changed in 15 years). The box always appears right before it downloads the email.

In the past, this has been a nuisance = sometimes a rather severe one, but, like constipation, would pass eventually. However, at five days, I am about ready to just delete the whole mess (if I knew how) and go with some other email source. I do not even know who to call or talk to about this problem. But, like my cell phone and other communications, I DO need my email (rather badly, I might say). Any help would be appreciated.

I had this happen a couple times where somehow by virus or other bug, changed my SMPT and IMPA server port values. Most recently I had attempted to add another email account and despite my and my support teams best effort nothing worked. So we deleted the account, reinstalled it and magically it was working again. I wish I knew more to help you other than to contact your support team where your email is hosted.

What is most likely is that the Bellsouth people changed their email server’s IP address or something similar. When your email tried to open it up, it detected that the server had changed, and is asking for new credentials to make sure that it’s really you.

I would further guess that your email client has some sort of “save settings” option, which you need to check or save.

The irony, of course, is that Bellsouth.net has not existed as an entity for 10 years.

Most email providers have an webmail option. Have you tried that option?
