Are you addicted to your phone?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) June 20th, 2016

What is the average amount of time you use your phone daily? Do you think you’re addicted to it and can’t keep it away?

Yeah it’s a problem for me. I used to be able to entertain myself during slow moments with my imagination alone but now I reach for my phone. I wish that weren’t true.

My phone is just a phone. I use it mostly for texting, in order to have a verifiable record for communications and their content, and sometimes for live conversations. I never answer incoming calls. Until this recent Fluther trouble, I’ve rarely, if ever used it for net activity. I find the small screen ans keyboard infuriating for serious work.

I have two addictions, and that is enough for me: Caffeine and fine food in large amounts. I enjoy these addictions immensely and have no intention of giving them up.

Not at all. Still have a 20th century flip phone. Use it only when traveling.

ragingloli's avatar

I only use it as an alarm clock.

No. It’s mainly a business tool. And it hangs on my wall.

You mean my camera that an MP3 player and has GPS navigation too? nope

I have a flip phone, too. Txt just a bit with only a few people.

When I got a tablet I was obsessed with Angry Birds for a few months. Eventually that burned out… somewhere in the outer space version. I think Rio is still my favorite version.

Totally not addicted to my phone at all. If I’m having a lazy day, I’ll leave my phone in the charging dock and not touch it at all. I have my phone turned off majority of the day when I’m at work (because retail workers are not allowed to use personal mobile phones on the shop floor).

No, my phone is a useful tool occasionally.
However, I keep my Kindle with me at most times, and I use it incessantly.

I am not addicted to it, but it can be a bad habit at times.

I know I am not completely hooked on it, because I can do things like go out for dinner and music with my girlfriend, and not check it for five hours. Or spend time in Spain and only use it for the camera while out sight seeing for the day.

There is an expectation from work that we check our email while commuting, or when out to lunch, and once or twice in the evening.

Yes, to some degree. I’m often criticized by my parents for looking at nothing but the phone. I’m even accused of being addicted to my phone by my big family. Yeah, I stick to my phone all day evidently this response, but not always, like my family think. Give me something more engaging and I’ll drop my phone immediately. It’s especially true when I participate in very exciting activities that keep me busy. But the thing is, I get bored very easily. And when I’m bored I draw out my phone. You can say the phone is just something to keep my hyperactive mind entertained.

I always feel horrible in family gatherings where all the adults chit chat about things I can’t understand or have no interest in. I can’t use my phone either because it’s considered impolite. I just want to disappear.

Every… waking… moment. When my phone is charging I use the laptop.

I use my phone for a lot of things. It hooks up to a cassette adapter in my car to play music through the car speakers. It plays the lectures and audio books I fall asleep to. It gets me where I’m going without getting lost, with the GPS app. It does many things for me, but were I without it I would compensate.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I need it for work, and on the weekends I may not even turn it on.
so no.

Not addicted but bummed when I don’t have it and I wish I did.

I was watering my bee balm this evening and a ruby-throated hummingbird appeared in the flowers. It was at eye level for me and I could have taken a great shot of it with my phone.

Not at all. I just have it so work and family can find me if necessary. I usually don’t even take it with me unless I am out for many hours. Most times I don’t even hear it ringing!

I use it mostly for camera, FB, text, calls and once in a while, internet. Never for games, never for GPS, never for music. I’m not one to always be looking at the phone and I rarely use it at the table, with friends or at restaurants. I’ll check it occasionally, more if I’m expecting a communication.

Last night I left work in a hurry (friends were coming over to my house) and when I was in the car and about a block from my job, I realized I left my phone at work. I’m off today so it means all day without phone, including two school events where I really would like my camera. To get the phone would have meant driving around the block, parking, going back up to my office on the 4th floor, unlocking office, getting phone and doing the reverse – about fifteen minutes of hassle. I said hell no, I’ll do without. My big dilemma is for the camera for the school events today. I’m going to bring my regular camera, and I’m thinking I’ll probably look a bit weird, since most people use cell cameras now, not regular cameras.

Totally addicted badly. I spend around 16 hours a day on phone, not just phone, laptop+phone and its scary, I just don’t feel safe with out lappy or phone. I need it all the time, even during sleeping, I sleep keeping it under my pillow so its within my reach at every moment. I know I am sounding like a maniac but I have become one, not hard to admit. Its not good for my eyes. :(

Hey!
Well, I can say I’m not that addicted to it anymore! I used to spend at least 3 straight hours staring at my phone day and night.

Recently, I realised how toxic social media can be. It has affected me in so much ways that I can’t work, can’t sleep, can’t study. It distracted me so much! It also made me feel very bad about myself because I felt like I’m not living life to the fullest.

So, 2 weeks ago, I deleted all of my social media apps on my phone and went to self-preservation mode. It wasn’t easy! I downloaded them back after the first 2 days. I deleted them again after downloading because it felt like I wasn’t being honest with myself. Now, I feel soooo much better. I feel confident, I very much like myself, and I can finally focus. I’m proud of learning how to disconnect myself from things like this, to reconnect with myself again.

Quite the opposite, actually.

One of the leading indicators of addiction is an interference with one’s normal life.

Various functions of my phone enhance my efficiency.

This is the difference between addiction and reliance.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Yes. I still fail to see why having email, voice, gps, weather alerts calculator, fitness tracker, music, note taker etc, etc handy is a bad thing when used responsibly.

imrainmaker's avatar

If you’re using it in day to day activities it’s fine but being overly dependent on anything isnt good. If you can’t keep it away over weekend also that’s not a good sign. You’ll see many youngsters using it all the time having no time to talk to family.

chelle21689's avatar

Yeah. I constantly surf the Internet, I always have random questions pop in my head, one thing leads to another.

jca's avatar

I went from Monday night to Wednesday morning without phone, as I’d left it at work as I explained above. What I missed most yesterday when off of work was having the phone as a clock and being able to check for texts, FB and internet when I had time to kill. It did feel a little weird that if I needed to call someone, I couldn’t.

I use a regular GPS so that’s not something I need the phone for.

citizenearth's avatar

Thank goodness, NO. I do not want to be addicted to any kind of phone and glad to say, I am still not.
