What is the dollar index?

I see it on NBR (Nightly Business Report ) on PBS. I have no clue what it is.

It basically tracks the value of American dollars and compares it to the value of other currencies.

It is an index of the value of the dollar against a basket of six other currencies, (euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc).
