What can I eat before my workout to keep from crapping out?

Asked by metadog (378points) July 6th, 2009

Hi! I am pushing 40 and still work out pretty hard 4 days a week. Typically an intense 30 minutes on the elliptical followed by 30 minutes of weight training. Pre workout I typically have some yogurt with creatine and some nuts. Post workout, a protein shake. Unfortunately, I seem to shoot my wad by the end of my cardio. I am dragging through my weight routine. Any fuel suggestions?

the general rule, to the best of my knowledge, was always a small serving of protein for the punch and a small serving of carbs to burn like a time-release of energy. I could be wrong…

Nothing. Anything you eat you are eventually going to be crapping out.

@AstroChuck
That made my day.

@AstroChuck does eating ice cream count?

Maybe try increasing your calorie intake before your work-out, or try eating a snack in between cardio and weights in addition.

I think ‘shooting my wad’ means something entirely different where I come from :- / lol

I find that i have different energy levels at different times. I started working out after my day at work and although it was convenient I felt exhausted when I got home. Now i enjoy working out early in the morning when I feel refreshed and awake. I eat a protein bar and drink a cup of coffee before I work out and I feel great.

You might try either mixing your cardio and weight training (which is what my trainer has me do) or alternate. On some days do only cardio and light lifting. On other days really work on building muscle, using just enough cardio to keep your heart rate up during your lifting.

What I do on Mondays and Wednesdays is 60 minutes of cardio and some strength work on my abs and lower back. Then on Tuesday and Friday I do 10 minutes of cardio followed by weight-lifting sets. Between each set I hit the stairs for a few minutes (I run about four flights up and down) to keep my heart rate up. Sometimes on Saturdays I will then do one of the aerobics classes for an hour, just to hit different muscles.

It works pretty well for me (and I am well-past pushing 40).

My trainer has me alternating cardio/weights because he said you need a full day recovery between weight days. Perhaps try alternating days, and increasing your workout efforts on each day.

Your weight training should be by resistance, not by time. More weight, and slower, will get you better results. Likewise, on cardio, a half hour’s not really that much, unless you’re getting your heart rate up.

Perhaps a session or two with a personal trainer will be a good investment for you.

@AstroChuck You got to it before I could. Crapping should not be the word used for being tired.

My pre-workout snack is usually a Stonyfield Farm Fat-Free Organic yogurt and fruit. I also take a VItamin-B supplement and that seems to help keep my energy up, too.

@sweetteaindahouse oh! that’s what crapping out means in this context! ...I see!

add a quarter of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to your preworkout mix. It’s great, you’ll have that extra energy

I have been working out since 1976 and have never stopped since 1983 . Expect during Pregnancy.
I was trained by some wonderful people .
I do not eat before I work out. I exercise in the early morning . I eat afterword.

I usually go with a power bar, some grapes, an apple, and a banana. Even if you aren’t lactose intolerant, try to avoid to yogurt and dairy. It just kind of slows everything down.

Eat 1 and half to 2 hours before you begin your workout! If you eat any earlier it will just sit in your gut. You won’t get any of the nutrients or energy.
