What are some fun things to do in Nashville for a night?

Asked by ambos (496points) December 21st, 2009

My husband and I are driving from Michigan to Mobile, Alabama. Along the way we’re going to stop in Nashville and spend the night. Any suggestions on something we can do while we’re there would be much appreciated. We’re not going to have a ton of time, so even if it is a restaurant suggestion we’d be grateful.

Never been there, but it would seem that the Grand Ol’ Oprey is the obvious top choice.

If you are only going to be there for the evening I recommend the Nashville Wild Horse Saloon

If you are going to have some daylight hours the shops in that area of town are fun. There are printing shops that sell reprints of vintage show posters. I got an Elvis playbill that made a Elvis fan friend of mine ecstatic.

There is also a candy shop Pralines by Leon that will make you a junkie for life.

I second the above choice on the Wildhorse Saloon. many tv shows have been produced there and you might just see any country artist at anytime there. also, one of the nations top 5-star hotels is in Nashville…..The Opryland Hotel. it is truly one of a kind. its gorgeous and there is nothing you could possibly wish for, that they will not honor. take your camera!

I agree with john65pennington The Opryland Hotel is all decorated for the holidays now and it is a sight to see. Even on an ordinary day the conservatory is a beautiful sight.

Check with the local Chamber of Commerce. They usually have a list of pamplets with local attractions and they also get coupons from some of them. They also get a list of current events going on that only the locals would know and is free and open to the public.

Chamber of Commerce is located at 3rd Ave. N. and Commerce St., downtown.

I echo what the people of above say. I love going downtown and stopping in at all sorts of bars to hear the live music. Check this link for more info about Music City.

Everybody already listed Opryland and all the places downtown on Broadway and Second Avenue. My favorite part of Nashville to hang out is West End Avenue and Elliston Place. Follow Broadway west from downtown until it splits to the right onto West End Avenue. You can also go hop on Broadway to West End from the I-40 loop around downtown. The University of Vanderbilt is on West End. There is all kinds of restaurants and shops in this area. Also Centennial Park is on West End. They have a huge scale replica of The Parthenon in Greece. Elliston Place is also known as the “Rock Block.” Elliston Place parallels West End pretty much. To get to Elliston Place get on Church Street downtown and go west until the name changes to Elliston Place. On Elliston Place there are two rock venue right across the street from another. One is called the “Exit-In.: They have all kinds of cool bands play. Across the street is a smaller club called “The End.” I love going to “The End.” Right next to these two places on Elliston Place are several of my favorite restaurants and bars in Nashville. There is Samurai Sushi..YUM, a little pizzeria with awesome pizza and cal-zones and “The Gold Rush.” The Gold Rush is a bar and restaurant. They have the best freaking ribs in Nashville. Oh yeah in the same area of town is an awesome used book/cd/action figure/boardgame/anything collectible store called “The Great Escape.” Check it out. You might find that 1972 Elvis lunchbox you have been dreaming about. If you have any questions about the Gnashville PM me and I will try and help you out.

OKAY, I KNOW IT’S A BUNCH OF WORDS THAT ARE NOT ACTUALLY WORDS BUT IT’S DRIVING ME NUTS! It’s the “Grand Ole Opry” @janbb. Excellent choice, but keep in mind that you would need to buy tickets well in advance, for a certain date and time, so probably not ideal for when you’re driving through town for 1 day in the dead of winter.

The Wildhorse is fun, but they have a cover charge (it varies on the night) while a lot of the more classic old-timey downtown bars along Broadway (the same street) don’t have cover charges, such as Tootsie’s and Robert’s.

Some fun day-time activities are the Christmas Trees at Cheekwood, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (if you like art), the Parthenon in Centennial Park (it’s breathtaking).

Some great local eats include Calypso Cafe, Provence, and Kalamatas, which are local chains, very reasonably priced, and Caribbean, French, and Greek, respectively.

Also check out www.nashvillescene.com for events and other ideas. And feel free to PM me with any questions.

@La_chica_gomela You’re right. I wrote it fast and wasn’t checking well.

Drive as quickly through it as you can. Stop in Birmingham instead and go to Five Points.

Welcome to my state.

What you need to do in Nashville is to visit TPAC to see a show, visit the best college football team ever, Vanderbilt and cheer on the Titans and Predators.

The Gaylord Opryland Hotel is a must-see (and must-stay), but they flooded in early May and will not reopen until mid-November (according to their website). Nashville has a friendly, laid-back vibe that you’ll enjoy wherever you venture. Have fun!
