Can anyone help me come up with a title for my essay on typography?

“Great Question” (0points)

I wrote an essay for my typography class that I’m eventually going to set up in web format. The essay discusses how the choice of type faces can change the meaning of words/text. In the essay I use illustrative examples of both typographic and non-typographic natures, such as the wine glass metaphor in Beatrice Warde’s 1932 essay “The Crystal Goblet or Type Should Be Invisible,” Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, and “green living” logos.

Thing is, I can’t think of an appropriate title, and it’s driving me nuts! Any ideas?

Please don’t bug me that I’m asking for help on a homework related question; I’ve already done the work myself, I’m just asking for suggestions.

Oh, if anyone feels like reading this essay for a better idea (It’s about 820 words), PM me and I’ll send you a link where you can download it. I’m a little wary about putting my intellectual property out onto the internet where anyone can take it.

Sounds like a great essay on the visual rhetoric of typography. I’d like to read it before suggesting titles, if you don’t mind. (I’ll PM you.)

I’d love to read it too, if you’ve got the time! It sounds a lovely essay, “right up my street”.

As for the title, do you want something descriptive, or something funny, like a pun? Perhaps it could just be “Typography” but in all different fonts (a poor idea, I know, I’m just demonstrating a point). If you want a pun, maybe something like… I don’t know, actually, I’m no good with puns.

I don’t get it. What is this about? Can you tell me in one sentence what it’s about?

I am biased against titles that rely on puns, clever though they be. I’d recommend finding one that stands on its own in describing the main concept of your essay.

What about a title in where the words don’t mean a thing, but rather you express meaning through the typography itself. For example;

[title]

No meaning in and of itself, but each letter could be uniquely different in some way (spacing, size, ect.)

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! Now to choose…

By the way, you’re wise not to put your essay out here. There’s another risk besides having your work stolen. If your instructor decides to search on a distinctive phrase just to see if you plagiarized it, he or she will get a hit on the whole thing—and then either you have to prove that you and ParaParaYukiko are the same person (thereby giving up your anonymity) or you’re in trouble.

You might be finished with the essay already, but you mentioned you’d be setting it up in a web format. I’m a little curious of how you are going to be doing this. Will you use images for the typeface examples, or will you incorporate the type with the actual content on the page using @fontface CSS selectors. This could turn out to be an interesting result!

@Vortico I’m creating the web page in HTML and CSS, and yes, my class has been using @fontface CSS selectors. It’s a short essay, and I’m only using visuals for three of my four examples: two of them are images, one with type modified with CSS. I’ll probably use @fontface for my title font, though. :)

@Jeruba I’ll be taking the RTF file off my website once the web version is done. I know what you mean about plagiarizing, but since the essay is meant ultimately to go on the Internet anyway, there’s not much I can do, you know? Thank you for your concern though. :) Once I’ve finished this course I don’t think I’d keep it up there anyway… Let’s just hope no one decides to copy it between now and the end of the semester.
