As a 30 something, is it sad that I'm willing to queue at midnight to ensure i have a copy of COD Black Ops on the release date?

“Great Question” (1points)

In the past I have found that if I’m too relaxed about getting a new release I have to wait a week after the release date for stock to replenish itself.
I realise some of you will take the piss but hey I’ve broad shoulders and that’s why it’s in the social scene.
Will any Flutherites be doing the same?

Yep. And I’m 28, so maybe that is comforting to know?

Yes it is! Not there’s anything particularly wrong with that. I’ve pre-ordered mine so pwnage here we come!

Why should it be sad? I don’t think video games are just for kids anymore.

A whole week? Oh, shucks!

Yes, it is kind of sad that your feel so strongly about video games rather than your family or a vocation.

I don’t think it’s sad. I pre-order all the games I want to get on the day they are released so that I don’t have to wait in line just to be sure to get them though.

I’m not much for midnight releases, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. There was one game that came out last year that the local Gamestop had a big shindig for. Took up a large portion of the parking lot set up with projection TVs, computers, consoles and a bunch of other things. Something like that can be fun.

But it’s not for me. I got Fallout: New Vegas on Steam and was playing it the morning of the release date at 5am, just so I needle a co-worker who was picking his up at Best Buy later in the afternoon.

I have a couple of friends older than you that will be lining up for COD Black Ops.

I’ll be getting it at midnight but I am 17. It will be the first one that I have gotten at a midnight release and I’m doing it because this will be the last chance for all of my friends and me to do that before we split up for college. I thought about going to get Rockband 3 last night but I decided it wasn’t worth it.

Pfft, I’m 31 and I just pre-reserved my copy of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm for the release date on Dec 7th. And I go stand in line around 9:30 pm for the midnight premieres of movies that I’m desperate to see, like Twilight, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribean, Lord of the Rings, etc… In fact, I’ll be in line with a girlfriend of mine at 9:30 on Nov 18th to watch the midnight premiere of Part 1 of the final Harry Potter movie.

Oh, and we’ve also worn Hogwarts robes and wands for the premieres in the past. A bit embarassing, but take heart that I’m a bigger nerd than you.

Lol no… it means you’re cool like me :P

@WillWorkForChocolate ..I preordered the collector’s edition of WoW: Cata the day it was available – the downside ..I’m getting it in the mail so I won’t get to play it until after the 7th. I also remember when I got my first xbox 360, I was in line at 2am and I was the first one there! It was winter, so I was bundled up and I brought blankets and a chair ..lol. I did the same for Halo 2.

I imagine most of us willing to wait in a queue for something we really love, regardless of our ages.

I stayed up till midnight for Halo Reach lol. even if i didnt play it until morning after sleeping. to me its just exciting to get it at midnight. the people are cool and the store typically hands out free stuff and its just fun

I don’t think it’s “Sad” per-se, but I don’t get it. I LOVE me some 360, I LOVE me some Halo Reach and Fable 3. . . I’ve never loved any game enough to do that whole midnight release thing.

Let me re-think here . . . it’s not sad assuming you show other things in life at least equal passion. If you wouldn’t exert the same effort on other areas (say friends/family), then yea, it’s sad. Otherwise, nope, do what you love!

OreetCocker's avatar

Yes I will and I did it recently for FIFA 11! It was for my kids….....honest!

Nothing wrong with that, your call, but you obviously don’t know any other gamers whatsoever if you think you’re the only person doing this.

Remember the PS3 release lol. Hell in Japan people skip work whenever SE coughs out some damn DQ game haha.

Mikewlf337's avatar

Nothing wrong with that. It isn’t sad because everyone has a hobby. What’s the difference between playing video games and watching TV, or reading a book? Nothing. Since you are 30 something that means you are a grown man and can play video games if you want to. If somebody has a problem with it that is their problem not yours. What a grown man does with his spare time is his business. As for waiting at the store at midnight? Your call. People in their 50s have waited in line for dumber things than video games.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Mikewlf337 What do 50 year olds wait in line for? A colonoscopy? Haha, I jest, I jest.

Mikewlf337's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate LOL. I have seen them in video game stores and not buying games for their grandchildren. I sure alot of people that age play them they just won’t admit it lol.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Mikewlf337 I’ll be one of those 50 year olds… I love games, although I didn’t become a “gamer” until after I had kids and discovered video games to be a pleasant method of escape when I need it. I didn’t become a WoW nerd until a year and a half ago, LOL.
