How do you fix a very damaged buttonhole?
I have just received a vintage skirt and the buttonhole on the waistband is very frayed. The main problem is that the fabric is quite worn. I want to repair this skirt, but I don’t want to cause any more damage. Is there something I can use to reinforce it?

,When my drunkass first saw this question I thought it said, ” How do you fix a damaged butthole? Seriously get a needle and thread and just get in there and sew up the rip or whatever needs fixin.

There is a stitch in sewing called a buttonhole stitch. Imagine in this video that the top line is the cut of the existing buttonhole opening.
Edit: If you’re not comfortable with hand-sewing, take it to a dry cleaners and ask them to repair it for you. The buttonhole stitch on a sewing machine works like the handsewing, in theory.
Thanks guys, I edited my question to make it a bit clearer. I know how to fix a buttonhole, I’m just looking for alternative solutions due to the fragility of this piece.

If the fabric is very worn, find a similar color fabric to use as a backing when you make the repair. The new fabric will take the stress and allow the old fabric to still be used.
You can back the waistband at the buttonhole with a small piece of fusible interfacing, like what they use inside shirt collars to give them body.
oh boy @buster
I did the same thing.
I’d stitch a matching square of fabric (muslin, doubled) behind it then stitch a new buttonhole and cut it on the new fabric then trim off the excess underneath. If you’re careful, the button will cover the repair.
*edit just realized that’s exactly what westriverrat just said

I would use the iron on heavy duty interfacing and then stitch through that where the buttonhole is.
