What goes through my declawed cat's mind when he tries to sharpen his claws?

“Great Question” (4points)

My cat has no front claws. He is 8 and I believe they were removed when he was pretty young, aka not recently at all. But he is always trying to sharpen them on the door frame, and I am purely curious what he is thinking while he does this. Is it that he doesn’t realize that he doesn’t have claws? He has to, right, because they’re….not…there. Or is it just wishful thinking? Or is he just dumb?

I get such a kick out of it, because he’ll do it for 30 seconds at a time and it makes such a funny noise and he looks so goofy doing it.

Ha! My cats do this too – it certainly is amusing.

It is just an instinct.

I heard (on animal planet probably) that they have scent glands between their fingers and what they are doing is spreading their scent. It is probably instinct that causes them to mark their territory.

“Every time I do this, the human female watches me so intently with a quizzical look on her face, it’s hilarious! Watch, I’ll do it some more!”

“it used to work before.. perhaps if I try harder it will work again!” I heard a few very strange interpretations (all human off course) of why they do this – the weirdest one was that they are healing you by doing so.. Perhaps he is trying to “heal” your sofa?

Dogs that have had their voice boxes removed so they can no longer make a barking sound still “bark”. Apparently they don’t even notice the difference. It just “feels right”.

Mine does this as well, I think it is an instinct.

Cats have a brain. They do not have a mind.

Why do circumcized males masturbate?
Mutilating the body is not enough to take the instinct out of the mind.

“Man my claws must be really sharp. They are so sharp they just slice right through this door frame without any resistance.”
