Kitty Litter: Recently my cats have been tracking in wet pawprints that are grey (assuming litter tracks). Why is this happening? I don’t recall this happening before. I use Tidy Cat Crystals clumping litter. It had not done this until recently. What gives? Is there a clumping brand out there that they won’t track in?

The dust from the kitty litter is getting wet and making their feet dirty. I never really liked the clumping litter. I no longer have a cat, but my mother has three inside. She will only use the white kitty litter. It doesn’t leave tracks. Also she uses the little mat that you put outside the kitty litter box, and it cleans their feet.

We’ve never had issues with grey tracks, but cat litter, particularly from the cat with long hair, where it seems to get stuck and then unstuck throughout the rest of the house.

I have a mat. I might go back to the old school litter. Thanks!

I have recently seen ads on TV for Feline Pine I haven’t tried it yet,but I think I will. They show a chart with all of the nasty chemicals in normal kitty litter, and it’s pretty upsetting!

blubatron9: thanks, I am going to try this Feline Pine!

Swheat Scoop natural litter is pretty awesome and doesn’t create that “litter dust” like the clay-based litters do. My cat seemed to take to it right away and I haven’t had any problems with it being spread around the house or anything.

@cat owners; you didn’t tell me I would have to worry about kitty litter as well as fleas, ticks, tick larvae the size of sesame seeds that stick to eyelids and what was the other? Ear mites? .

Milo the magnificent is arriving here in two weeks and my daughter informs me (after I said that I would take the cat) that he will be sleeping on my chest. Cats don’t have their own little cat baskets and blankies? Stay close at hand, everyone, please.

@gailcalled

All cats are different. We have 2. One sleeps in our bed. The other uses us for food and heat. I hardly see her :)

@irie: do you live in a climate that is warm enough to leave the litter boxes outside all year long? I am desperately taking a cram course in Catcare 101, since I grew up w. dogs.

@gailcalled:
I live in Colorado, so no. We keep litter box in garage with access via kat door. I have 3 different rugs/mates on the path to the kitty door and I still get tracks. Ugh. It is really freaking out my husband, he just figured out what the substance was!
I’ve had cats my whole life so bring on the questions. I have 2 dogs as well :)

BTW: Cats are MUCH easier to care for than dogs. Less hands on work is needed with them.
Just feed, water, vaccinate, & love.

have you tried the litter called yesterdays news? It’s made of recycled news paper.

I don’t like feline pine and neither does Grisgris. It gets wet and stays wet; it doesn’t
suppress stink.
@Gail: If Milo is using a litter box outside, why not just let him pee outside in the vast
landscape you call home? He can figure it out in about one minute, even if he’s never done it before.
On the other hand, if you think a fenced yard is going to keep him safe, forget it. He will climb the fence immediately and run away into the dark forest, there to be eaten by
dragons and bears.
@Gail again: Cats sleep wherever they want to sleep. Your daughter didn’t tell you this? Fair enough; people are supposed to know these things intuitively. You will LOVE having Milo sleep with you! It’ll be so comfy and delicious!!

@susanc : I am working in the feline pine and not liking at all for just the reasons you stated. I will give it a week or so more. the smell isn’t too bad though.
