How do you feel about Force Feedback steering wheels for gaming?

I felt as though there’s enough gamers in the cloud of Jellies to answer this question.

I recently got the DrivingForce GT for Gran Turismo 5. It’s my first and I’ve got to say, I’ve played on some in the past (On Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2 & PC) and I was quite disappointed in the past, but this one that I own now is pretty B.A..

Tell me about your experiences… Do you feel as though it enhances the experience or just frustrate you?

I used to have a steering wheel back when I had dreamcast and I fucking hated that thing lol. But the one you just linked there looks pretty friggin bad ass indeed. Never tried one out though so I cant give any feedback on it.

It’s far far easier to feel the line with a feedback wheel, particularly when you’re coming off the apex of a corner and want to get your foot down as far as possible and as quickly as possible.

Luffield and Woodocate corners are an order of magnitude harder without feedback.

I really like Force-Feedback flight yokes and joysticks (back when I used to be really into Flight Simulator), but only if you can turn it off. There are many times in Flight Simulator when you don’t really want the feedback, you want to be able to just do whatever the fuck you want without all that much feedback or resistance.

I can’t speak for wheels, though, I’ve only used it with joysticks and yokes.

My first wheel was a Microsoft one. It was either first or second generation. I thought it was great. The motor was strong enough to yank the wheel out of my hands and going through turns the resistance tightened up so it felt like you were in a turn.

Since then I’ve been disappointed in every wheel I’ve gotten, including a later MS wheel and the Driving Force GT. I don’t know if it’s the mechanics or the programming but all I get out of it is vibrations when I run over ground or hit another car. I don’t get any sensation of dynamic resistance being applied during turns or anything else.
