When did the shift from being identified from a nudist to naturalist begin?

When did being a naturalist take preference over being a nudist? When I was a child if someone said they were a naturalist it usually meant they lived simple, grew their own food, was eco friendly, etc. Now reading articles on the Net and other places when naturalist are mentioned it is attached to people who care to live with out clothes. I can see the connection if you take that wearing clothes leaves you less then when you naturally came into the world. Did the swing to naturalist from nudist was because naturalist seem less like bucking the system and being controversial to being more of a positive life style? Does people still use the term or consider them selves to be nudist anymore?

Looking at some sites, it seems to have been a gradual shift. And may I say, that was a risky google search – I got some scary sites!

@Hypocrisy_Central I haven’t figured out how to whisper here, so please forgive me. But the term is naturist.

@bkcunningham – - Like this – -. you put two dashes in front of the words you want to whisper but no spaces. I just put spaces so you could see it, but of course that broked it! Bold is * *, italicize is _ _ and cross out is – - (one dash).

Two dashes and no space. What am I doing wrong? I got it. In front and behind. Sorry to use this thread as a test.

2 dashes in front and in back of your phrase. I still don’t know how to link- someday.

I have no idea. Have known a few clothing optional types, but..I always thoguht ‘naturalist’ was more represenative of say, John Muir or something.

Who knows, maybe naked painting in the forest is where it all began. lol

A naturalist is someone who studies nature. Whether they do it in the nude is a different matter.

@marinelife

Right, that’s what I meant. ;-)

I just have this image of Roseanne Roseannadanna popping into my head saying her famous, “Never mind” to this question.

@Coloma Sorry, I didn’t read your answer before I posted.

I dated a guy that played naked volleyball at a local naturalist community.
Not my cup o’ tea, too many bouncy parts of my own to protect from the oncoming ball. lol

Naked hot tubbing is about as far as I go in the clothing optional realm.
