For those who have memorized and meditated on Scripture (specifically the Bible), what has been your most helpful, turned-to passage and why?
Please refrain from debates, arguments, rhetoric, etc. Thank you.
Also, I’m mindful of the many wonderful beliefs held by the many wonderful Jellies on Fluther. This said, I’d like to limit this particular thread to the Christian Bible. Perhaps in another thread, we could explore Scripture and passages from other resources.
My Story: I grew up in a Christian environment and had the opportunity to memorize all sorts of passages. One of the first that I distinctly remember is Philippians 4:4–9:
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
In times of stress, my heart and mind return often to verses 6–7:
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
This specific passage has been with me since childhood. Whenever life’s situations overwhelm me, I hear my inner-voice gently speaking to me “do not be anxious” (which I interpret as: “I know you’re anxious, but it’s okay to stop and breathe”). Then I hear the affirmation, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This comforts me, knowing and believing something greater than myself and my situation will keep the core of my being safe while I go through whatever it is I face. This alone prompts me to pause and breathe, as anxiety often tries to undermine my best self. After I meditate and act upon this passage by doing what it calls me to do, I notice a sense of peaceful clarity.
