What are characteristics of some of the dialects of Portuguese?

In layman’s terms, please, can anyone tell me some of the differences (specifically pronunciation-related) between Peninsular/European Portuguese and Brasilian Portuguese? Examples of words, and how they might be said differently would be very helpful.

It would be like British English and American English. Usually in Portugal they speak the “correct grammar”... respecting the correct order of pronouns in sentences, corcordance, etc. The accent of Portugal-portuguese is very strong and they tend to omit vowels inside the words. In Brazil, the portuguese is more “flowing”... saying all the vowels and syllables.
