What exactly is breaking a nail? Is it chipping the paint on the nail? Does the actual nail tear? What is going on in this “broken nail” scenario?

Chipping or cracking of the nail itself.

If you just chipped the paint, how is that breaking your nail?

@erichw1504 I don’t know, but my nails don’t chip or crack, they peel, so I didn’t know.

@MyNewtBoobs I’m not sure what you are trying to accomplish out of this question?

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@erichw1504 I’m trying to understand what a broken nail is.

erichw1504's avatar

@MyNewtBoobs Are you saying it’s an idiom? Because I’ve never heard of it before.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@erichw1504 People say “I broke a nail”.

@MyNewtBoobs I’ve heard “break a leg” before…

My g/f gets these all the time. She’ll be doing something and the nail either breaks off, usually on one of the corners, or splits partway down the nail.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Does it break off completely, like breaking a plate, or does it just kinda bend?

erichw1504's avatar

Peeling is not breaking.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@erichw1504 I get that you aren’t confused by this, but I still am, so please don’t derail the thread

She’s never had one break off completely. Its always a partial break or split on the end farthest from the cuticle. If it splits its usually for about ¼ to 1/5 of the way down the nail, not all the way down.

@MyNewtBoobs What? I AM confused. I still don’t know what you want.

@erichw1504 So then don’t answer.

@MyNewtBoobs My nails are not the peeling type. my mom’s are I have the type of nails that grow strong and long very quickly. I have one that broke off last week. It usually happens from something stupid, like from me opening a door, or a jar or slamming my finger into my desk…

Anywho, sometimes the tip cracks off, sometimes a corner chips off, and sometimes the worst happens-it breaks low on the nail bed…then I have to run for the clippers and cut it down as far as I can stomach w/out causing too much sensitivity to my finger tip.

is that what you were looking for? I inherited my awesome nails from my grandma…hers were almost as thick & strong as an emery board

@SpatzieLover Yes, that’s perfect! I thought it might be that I have shit nails. They’re like the flexibility of taffy with the layers of onions.
