Would adding yoga in between my weight/cardio days be too much?

I’ve been on a weight training schedule since the beginning of January after having to give up running due to compartment syndrome in my shins. I work out 3x a week, usually on Mon/Wed/Fri for approximately 2 hours a day. This workout includes about 25 minutes of intensive cardio along with a full body free weight routine that is broken up with 50 sit-ups, 20 step ups, 20 kettle bell swings and 20 hill climbers (and sometimes 20 burpees) in between working my shoulders, legs etc.

I want to include some activity on my off days. I found that when I tried to break my free weights up to cover off 6 days I ended up injuring my abdominal muscle and a thigh muscle. I immediately backed off and kept my weight routine to 3x a week with a rest day in between.

I’m facing surgery in 7 weeks to correct my shins and I’ll be off my feet for 2 weeks or so with a gradual resumption of activity. I’m wanting to be in good shape in the weeks leading up to that surgery but I also just want to max out my fitness as much as I can.

I practised ashtanga yoga for 10 years and eventually stopped out of boredom. I’m wondering if I’m nuts to want to include a yoga routine on my off days? I really don’t want to injure any more muscles.

I would think some yoga would be an ideal activity to alternate with the cardio and weights.

No, that’s pretty much what I did. Ran ten miles every other day, worked out with weights on alternate days, and did about ½ hour of yoga on weekdays and and hour on weekends. I was in AWESOME shape! Sigh! : )

Bail on the Ashtanga Yoga and find a good yoga therapist or Iyengar Yoga teacher to help you recover from you new challenge!

Not at all. I would make it Hatha yoga though,

@marinelife I practise yoga at home now and my practise is more hatha-like than ashtanga-like. That’s one thing a love about yoga is just how much you can mould it to what ever your daily needs are.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I’m going to start the yoga today and see how it goes.

I think it would be a great addition. It will heal your body.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir That was why I thought I would start adding it. I’ve been feeling a little tight lately due to the weights. I did yoga for an hour this morning and I feel much better.

Great to do Yoga…......it also relaxes you and the stretching also helps with muscle toning…
