@Scooby : This has been done to death, usually with a fox, a chicken , and a bag of grain. Okay…here goes: Take the goat across first (the wolf won’t bother the cabbages). Come back alone, and take either of the other two across-it diesn’t matter which one. We’ll say you take the wolf. Leave the wolf on the other side, and take the goat back over. Leave the goat and take the cabbages over and leave them with the wolf. Come back alone, get the goat and make your final trip over…
Incidentally, there was a great play on this in a Simpsons’ episode. Homer had Maggie, Santa’s Little Helper (their dog) and a bag a candy under the same circumstances. He miraculously (for Homer) figured it out, and on the last trip over in the boat saw a farmer on an island with a boat, and with a fox, a chicken and a bag of grain. The farmer asked for help, but Homer said, “No, I can’t figure that out…it’s too hard!”, or something to that effect.
