Is there a specific protocol for hosting a "Welcome to the Mansion" party when someone rolls over 10k?

“Great Question” (7points)

The other day, someone told me that it was a Fluther-ite’s turn to hit 10k and that person asked me if I wanted to “host the party.” I checked the meta section to make sure nobody else asked the question first, and since it was not posted yet, I wrote it out and posted it. It got modded for being a duplicate. I am 100% sure it was not written when I asked it. When I discussed it later with the person who told me to write it, I determined that according to the time I wrote it and the time of the question that was kept, mine was definitely first.

I don’t usually get involved in Fluther stuff because I’m not on the site all the time. I did feel bad, if I stepped on some toes by asking the question, if the job is supposed to go to Fluther insiders.

Just for the future, is there a certain protocol for who gets to “host the party” and how it’s done?

Not that I know of. I’ve tried several times, but always get beaten to the punch.

If there is one, it’d be news to me.

It is always the person who finds and posts first; that is the protocol. We had a little problem for a few months because the same person seemed to be always the one finding it through some obscure method but that has been solved.

Yes, the host must bring the pancakes.

I know the question of which you speak. The other question had been posted right before yours. If you looked on the meta tab after you had asked yours, you would have seen that your question was at the top, and the other was a question or two below it, indicating that it had indeed been asked before yours. There have been times when we have literally had to measure down to the second to see who posted a question first and those times can be quite confusing.

I’ve beaten some askers by a second or two, and been beaten by a second or two. When someone who is much beloved hits a milestone, count on the fact that many are watching and waiting for the right moment to get the Q out. It’s always a race. <zoom>

Sorry that you lost out @jca. It has happened to all of us.

Uhoh… I hope it wasn’t my post for Wilma that you’re referring to. If it is, I apologize.

I’ve certainly missed by a few seconds myself and also been modded for posting a duplicate party question. It’s purely a matter of timing, as they say above, and not of any kind of protocol or privilege.

Jill’s right: when I’m watching for someone to roll over, I open a second fluther window and have a question all ready to post the instant I see the numbers turn. Even at that, I’ve been too slow more than once. That’s just the way it goes.

I wasted a perfectly good evening waiting to pounce on @Jeruba‘s! (It was well worth it.)

Wasted. Hmm. Well, I stalked you for 4 days, @janbb, and then fell asleep on the sofa at the crucial hour. But I got to throw confetti anyway.

Hosting is definitely open to anyone, and the quickest one wins. Sorry about your frustration, @jca!

I stalked @janbb for 2 days, then started watching a movie and @JilltheTooth beat me! I actually had the whole post written out and it was such a nice tribute. Ah, well, I’ll save it for the 40K.

Pity there can’t be jointly hosted parties for when the post comes down to the wire like that. I think it is so sweet that people have posts ready to go and are hanging out to say “well done” to other jellies. Such a thoughtful thing to do.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@chyna and @Jeruba : If it makes you feel better, I was on the phone with Katawagrey at the time and paid so little attention to our conversation that I suspect she was a bit miffed at me. Yeah, I hosted the party, but at what cost! What sacrifice! heehee

This one’s on my ass and any crap should be sent my way. I’ve hosted a few K parties, but I think they’re more special when a jelly with a connnection with the honoree hosts. I noticed Wilma was getting close and went looking for someone to host. I asked chocolate if she could host, but she was tied up for awhile. Then I asked jca, but in the time between chocolate finished up what she was doing and asked the question. This one just didn’t work out as planned. fuck.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Don’t be sorry. I’m the one that fucked up. It was a really nice 10K party. I just gave jca some collateral damage.

jca's avatar

No apologies necessary! I was more embarassed at having taken the role and then getting shot down. Being shy in the first place, then sticking my neck out and then getting deleted was very embarassing for me.

@jca That’s what has me bummed out big time. I know you’re kind of shy and hadn’t hosted one of these, I got you to try and it didn’t work. I’m sorry.

@jca I did tell Adirondackwannabe that I was running around doing laundry and dishes and couldn’t think of anything “clever” off the top of my head, but then I thought “the dishes can wait a few more minutes since I like Wilma so much. So I had originally said I couldn’t but then I posted one anyway, not knowing that he was asking someone else. I do apologize for your embarassment, sincerely, and feel so bad that I was the cause of it. Next time I say “no” about something here, I’ll just stick to the “no” instead of changing my mind.

augustlan's avatar

Aww. You guys are great.

wilma's avatar

@jca did we post that at the same time? I didn’t see yours there! lol!
