Very easy to do with Audacity

Thanks. I downloaded it and tried working with the file, but it was going to take forever to import, so I stopped it for now. I started reading the tutorial it links to on wiki. I haven’t found the info I’m looking for yet though. Can you tell me how to quick get started? I went to file>open and selected the podcast. Is it normal for it to take a really long time to open a 90 MB file? Is there a quicker way to get started?

It shouldn’t really take too long to open, once it is you can simply select the section you want and cut and paste it into a new project, export that as wav then convert to mp3, you need an extra plug-in to export as mp3. It’s just easier to export as wav and convert.

Hmm, well it is taking a weirdly long time. I might let it run when I’m not using the computer. I just tried going to project>import audio and it is the same thing. Oh well, it looks like super useful software. Pretty cool it’s free. Thanks for the help.

If you need an audio file converter this one is great, it has a free and paid for version but the free version does so much I can’t see why most people would need the paid for version

I’ve just had a thought, if it’s a file you got from iTunes it’s probably in m4a format, Audacity may struggle with that so you might want to convert it to something like wav first? It may open easier then.

I saw that Audacity doesn’t support protected formats like that, but this is an AAC file. And I didn’t get it from iTunes, just that site I linked above.

I don’t have that audio converter. I’ve got one called Softe that I haven’t used yet. On a different computer I had one called FLAC from sourceforge (obviously it converted flac files), but only used it a few times. Do you have any experience with those? If the one you’re recommending is better, I’ll grab that since I haven’t really learned either of those other two in-depth. If it’s roughly the same, I’ll try softe.

The one I linked to I use all the time, it’s so simple a toddler could use it. You can choose where to create your converted file or there is a handy check box to create it in the same folder as the source file.

Maybe I’ll just use that one then. No need to learn multiple software programs to accomplish the same thing. Thanks.

I don’t know if you have a Mac or PC but if you use a Mac, Garage Band is a great tool.
From that one podcast you should be able to create your own separate podcasts using it.
If you get the chance you should try it.

Switch also adds an option to your right click drop down menu, you find the sound file you want, right click and choose Convert with Switch. You don’t think of Australia when you think of great free software but in this case you should. weird bottom of the world people doing good

I’ve got a PC, but some of my files say they were encoded with Garage Band. I heard that also works great with ripping vinyl.

@RareDenver So I went to use Softe to convert flac files, and despite saying it was free, it is just a trial offer. I can only convert 60 seconds of any given song. Stupid. So I downloaded Switch Sound and it works awesome. Thanks!
