How to go about disputing a bad job on my 5 year old car!

Hey,

Just stumbled upon this site, looks pretty cool. I bought a Yarris about 5 years ago when they first came out and now the clear coat on the roof is bubbling bad. I had waxed the card at regular intervals, much more than some of my friends and their cars are not even close to mine. I went to the dealer I bought the car from and they basically said “sorry it’s out of warrenty.” Do you think Toyota will help me if I call corporate? Should I call Toyota or the dealer corporate? What about a letter?

Thanks for the advice.

Welcome to Fluther.
You aren’t alone. I don’t know how many friends of mine with Toyota cars bitch about the paint. “Google Toyota Yaris paint problem” and you get 75,000 hits. You could try contacting corporate and politely say you are happy with the vehicle in general but the cosmetic paint issue makes you unlikely to buy another.

Since it is a common complaint, you might check the Car Talk forums and see if anybody found any remedies.

Toyota isn’t likely to do anything about your car but feedback might help them improve in the future. (Even my friend with a 2010 is seeing sun damage to her clearcoat, so they aren’t getting any better)

If it really bothers you, I’m afraid a new paint job is coming out of your own pocket.

Welcome to Fluther @FlutherJelly22. I had to look up “Yarris” to see what kind of vehicle it is to be honest. I’d write and call and keep track of everyone I correspond with. But, in my honest opinion, especially after five years, caveat emptor, buyer beware.

@worriedguy My ‘85 Corolla still has clearcoat so it must be a Yaris thing.

I think that you are unlikely to get help due to the age of the car. Sorry :(

@FlutherJelly22 Welcome, the clear coat is most probably coming off because the under coat is coming off the primer a common paint issue. Was the car garaged or left out in the Sun.
The warranty is over and Toyota will tell you they are not responsible for environmental damage.
