Can you help me get my HTC EVO phone to receive WiFi?

My husband and I just bought new cell phones and he wanted to make sure he can get wifi, because our 3g signal tends to be very weak and drop off where I live. My phone had no problem, we connected to our WiFi right away. His phone, the HTC, is not working. We must be doing something wrong, some simple switch right? He called tech help and they couldn’t get it either. I thought maybe I would ask fluther experts.

Here’s the HTC website instructions:

How do I connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi®?
To use Wi-Fi on your phone, you need access to a wireless access point or “hotspot”. On the Home screen, tap Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks. Select the Wi-Fi check box to turn Wi-Fi on. The phone will scan for available wireless networks. Tap Wi-Fi settings. Tap a Wi-Fi network to connect.

That is what my husband tried. I just noticed it was saying the signal stregnth is poor, but then it got stronger, it should be more steady in my opinion. My phone had no trouble. Could it mean the HTC has a weak antenna or something? It says it found my network, but it just keeps trying to connect, says obtaining IP address and then it goes to disconnected. My husband is not happy.

I have the HTC EVO and never had a problem setting up WI-FI. I simply clicked on the WI-FI option and it was instantaneous. Have you tried the 4G option? I has helped me in an area where the 3G isn’t too strong.

Sounds like a hardware malfunction, because it should be just as easy to connect as it was on whatever phone you have.

@Ajulutsikael We have the 4g. I mean we don’t live where there is 4g, but the phone is 4g capable. Did you mean the 4g phone seems to connect to wifi better? Our connection through the 3g network is working.

Are you using it at home? If so, check many wireless things are connected to your router, they have a limit to the amount of connections you can make at once.

My dad had the same problem with his HTC. There is a weird little setting that I’m trying to remember that isn’t obvious and it is on the phone. The phone isn’t in front of me right now but I’ll keep looking for the site that finally gave me the answer.

OK. I wish I could be more helpful but this is the general area
From Home>Menu>Settings
Wireless controls > Mobile network settings > Access Point Names.

From there click on menu and you should have some choices somewhere in there (sorry I don’t remember exactly which menu) one of which should be something like “reset”

When I hit that reset, everything worked fine.

@Blueroses I don’t see wireless controls. Wifi settings? That is basically what we have been doing. Although, I did not see access points. <Sigh>. If you get the info it is much appreciated. I might go back to the store tomorrow. My husband is full of hate for that phone right now. He really wanted an iphone and he stayed with Sprint for me. I hope we can fix it.

@JLeslie Reading @ddude1116 comment reminds me of the time a friend came over and tried to connect to my wifi, but he couldn’t because we had reached our router limit of connected devices. We just had to raise the limit and it worked. Maybe check that out?

@joe We thought of that. Definitely not the case. I even just tried my dads phone and his connected right up. But, it was a good suggestion. Just a few weeks ago my husband could not start his race car, was all freaked, we had to use a winch to get it up onto a trailer, and it turned out it was out of gas! Too bad it took a mechanic to tell us LOL. Sometimes it is the simple things we overlook.

@JLeslie Go to normal home screen and hit the menu button. There will be a settings option hit that and there will be a section for wireless. I’ve had my phone for 2 years and am still getting used to it.

I went to the Sprint store and they did someting and it worked. I brought it back home and it is working now. I hope we don’t have any other gitches. Thanks everyone.
