What do you think of these belief statements?

“Great Question” (3points)

I had to come up with 10 for my final project in English this year. They were supposed to be introspective. Did I succeed?
1. I believe familes are your first true teachers and friends.
2. I believe a smile can brighten anyone’s day.
3. I believe school is just a stepping stone to the future, and you should take advantage of it while you still can.
4. I believe mistakes are an important part of life; with each one you make you learn something new.
5. I believe friends are what keep us grounded.
6. I believe you are never too young to try and never too old to give up.
7. I believe you should live your life with no regrets.
8. I believe you should never let an opportunity pass you by.
9. I believe your childhood experiences make you who you are, but you are in control of who you become.
10. I believe ‘goodbye’s’ are inevitable, so you should live in the moment and take nothing for granted.

Constructive criticism only please. :)

Excellent job. If you stick be those for your whole life, you will do well.

Excuse me for honing in on what I don’t like. It makes me a pain in the ass, but an excellent editor.

7–9 are very conventional and IMNAAHO ridiculous. Life is hard, decisions are hard; we learn from our mistakes if we acknowledge them as such. Yada yada.

1 is the single example that I believe to be something you came up with and not something you are repeating. At that, it’s not very revelatory of what’s going on inside you.

I’m not sure I’d want to open myself up to a teacher by being “authentic” but something truly introspective, again IMNAAHO, would be:

I am afraid that living the life I see in front of me will be unrewarding, but I have so much support in that direction that I can’t imagine changing.

I want to be a good person, but I can’t commit to anything long enough to make any difference.

I can’t tell who’s lying and who’s telling me the truth. It makes me afraid that I’ll become a massive victim. But sometimes, it just seems easier to accept someone else’s truth than to make up my own mind.

That kind of stuff.

1. I believe that National League baseball is better without the Designated Hitter.
2. I believe I’ll be a Red Sox fan for life, regardless of the foregoing.
3. I believe in long, slow, deep, soft wet kisses that last three days. (Bull Durham)
4. I believe that he who hesitates is lost.
5. I also believe that one should look before he leaps.
6. I believe in the power of love.
7. I believe in the power of hate, too.
8. I believe the stars keep shining all throught the night.
I believe if we just keep trying it will be alright.
I believe that someday we’re gonna find our way.
And I believe in a beautiful day.

I believe in lovers walking side by side.
I believe that someday we’ll be satisfied.
I believe the angels listen god hears us pray.
And I believe in a beautiful day.
Yeah I believe it’s gonna work out ok.

But not for me, and not for you.

I believe, I believe, I believe.
I believe, I believe, I believe.

I believe there’s an answer waiting when the day is done.
I believe if you just keep searching you’ll find someone.
I believe that you and I just lost our way.
And I believe in a beautiful day.
I still believe in a beautiful day.

But not for me, and not for you.
I know your tried, and I tried to.
Sometime all our dreams just don’t come true.

I believe, I believe, I believe.
I believe, I believe, I believe.
Oh…Oh…Beautiful day. (Chris Isaak)
9. I believe I’m done here.

Go Sox!

Personally, I prefer “one” rather than “you.” I believe families are one’s first teachers.

I like your list very much and agree with @marinelife. The next two comments seem to come from people who don’t remember what being (I’m assuming) in high school was like. You may have a different list in four years and another 5 years after that, each being more sophisticated in its expressiveness and possibly with a more cynical tone as the afore mentioned commentaters demonstrate.

Those are good statements. However to make them even better, change “I believe” to “I think” or “I realize” on each statment.

Those quidelines are epic !! how long did it take you to come up with those? I agree with sliceswiththings and gondwanalon because if you wanted to perfect it you could just go for the grammatical aspects but as for the content it’s just perfect. great job:)

Thanks everyone!
@sliceswiththings I changed the ‘you’s too ‘one’s and they sound much better. Thanks for the advice.
@jumpenpro It didn’t really take too long once I got going.
