So, I’m looking to replace my old TV with a nice new flat screen…. In the past I was always quite a stickler for quality & can’t really complain. I’ve had my Toshiba 32” with all the toys, associated with the nineties, for the past eleven years. Now it’s finally giving out, Looks like the tube is about to go.. So, I’m trawling around looking for a replacement… I’m thinking about a Toshiba again definitely but not too sure about the format, what to go for? Should I opt for Plasma, LCD or LED or Blu – ray ???…… Decisions ,Decisions!! :-/
I’ll be looking to go for a 37” screen, ample screen for my little house but so many to choose from. So I thought I’d run it by you guys & find out what you decided upon & why, when it came time for you to upgrade your TV & maybe bring me up to speed on some of the techi stuff… I’m all hammers & spanners when it comes to electronic gadgetry :-/
I’m not looking to go over the top either, I’ll go to £1700 quid max…….
What do you think? :-/

i wouldn’t do 3D is all I have to say. It’s not clear that you won’t be paying for a technology that will be obsolete well before your television breaks down.

It really depends on what you want out of your tv. It also depends on the lighting in the room that your tv will be viewed in.

Last Xmas, we went tv shopping for the first time in about 8 years. I’d already done all the research over the months beforehand. I like to play video games a lot on my tv. I don’t usually have bright lighting; and, my blinds are almost always closed. I ended up going for a Panasonic plasma.
I chose Panasonic because I’ve had good luck with the brand over the years. I chose a plasma because I like the vibrant colours and picture. I can get away with plasma because our living room isn’t very bright (plasmas are much more reflective of light than LCD or LED tv’s) and we wanted a bigger size tv. The AR (anti-reflective) coating has improved significantly though. The only thing I really don’t like about the plasma…is it’s energy use.

LCD is very popular because of it’s cost and variety of sizes. Also, uses less energy than the plasma tv.

LED is like an upgraded, more energy efficient, LCD but is way more expensive than plasma and LCD. It has limited size options as well.

As for 3-D, I didn’t research those at all.

After posting, I found a comparison that may help you decide. Here’s another.

I’m with @iamthemob – I just wouldn’t go for 3D. The technology is still new and improving, so whatever you get will probably be obsolete within a couple of years.

We have an LCD, and haven’t had any problems with it for the last 3 years or so that we’ve had it. There’s next to no glare on the screen, and the only downside that I see to it is that it does throw quite a bit of heat if you put your hand near it after it’s been on for a while.

LCD or LED. There’s no such thing as a blueray TV. Just so you don’t waste time looking for it.

Plasma, no, the screen will start turning green after being on so long.
3D, not worth the money considering how fast technology changes.

LCD/LED is the best way to go. I have an LED and I love it, feels very new, uses less energy, a little more spendy though. We also have out LCD which was very cheap for how large it is. It’s definitely the most used out of all the TV’s and no problems.

@Stefaniebby what do you mean “turning green”? If you are speaking of the burn-in issue, that’s pretty much obsolete now :)

@PluckyDog I was talking about the burn in issue. I didn’t know it has been fixed, I just know that my old Plasma has CNN amongst other things burned into it. It’s not so much a bother anymore as I use it only for video games but it’s an awful problem when you’re watching TV and all the people are green! Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks much guys, I had heard 3D was a waste of time.. Definitely not going to get sucked in to that money pit…. I’ve found a nice deal, better than what I expected, that should suit me down to the ground, plus a free Blu-ray box thrown in for good measure, Toshiba 37” I thought about spending to my max but Nahh, this looks like it will do just fine….if I get five years out of it I’ll be happy……. Thanks again ;-)
