“Great Question” (4points)

I am a High School student. I started learning the basics of business last year. Now its time to move to another city and its the time of the year where you apply for schools. Normally I would just apply for the same course as I was doing last year… to continue in that way but since I have developed an interest in web designing, photography and filmography its becoming more difficult to choose what I want to do. And adding to that I am also considering going into the IB. The school that I want to apply to has Web designing and business. And the other one IB. So I am stuck if I should choose business, designing or IB. At thing very moment I am leaning more towards business. My dad though doubts me that I really want to do business, he thinks I would enjoy web designing much more.

You can actually mix both. You take business courses and do graffic design as well. Graffic design is used in many businesses and if you ever work for a graffic design business and want to branch out it will be a good thing to have a business degree to help you make the right decisions.

What is IB? The only thing I can think of that is related to education is International Baccalaureat, but I’m thinking that’s not right in this context.

What would you study if you chose IB? What level are you studying at? Will you go on to further study? Would you be able to get a better general grounding with IB and specialise later in to web design and business? Or do you need to choose now?

I’m guessing you are not from the US. Unfortunately, a majority of people here are (at least thats my impression) so we don’t understand the context.

That being said, your dad may well understand you better than you do yourself. Take what he says seriously. Also, if your in high school, no offense but you nothing about business. “Basics of business” is probably the same old BS I took in high school. So your dad might saying that you will enjoy “real world” web design better than “real world” business.

i too am wondering what IB is? but he is your dad and he will understand your choice. sometimes parents want their kinds to do what they couldnt but wished they had. but you have to make that choice, youre your own person. you have to make the choice to make YOU happy. good luck i hope it works out for you.

What do you enjoy doing? Are you thinking about business because you enjoy the work? That is what you should be using as your criteria.

You are very lucky you have such a supportive dad.

sorry i said kinds instead of kids.

It doesn’t sound like your dad doubts you, it sounds like he is supportive of you following your passion. A person who is passionate about a skill can find work; the business side you can learn on the job or in the future. Knowing double entry bookkeeping does not help you sell a design to a customer; being able to design something that will make your customer happy will win you more business.

The OP lives in Iceland. I’m guessing IP stands for International Business.

Sleep on it and maybe you’ll find enlightenment.

IB stands for International Baccalaureate.

<—- IB graduate

You need to make up your mind about what you want, and then make a decision you can explain to your dad.

I think the idea of doing the basics and then choosing the web designing as extra sounds good. It then gives me more opportunities I guess.

Stinley's avatar

Definitely the more opportunities you can create for yourself the better. It is important to try lots of different things at this stage to get a good idea of what you like and what you are good at.
What does your Dad think of IB?

My husband is going to be teaching IB next year in Maths but I hadn’t realised you were in europe-ish so IB now makes sense.

It is really your life, so you have to choose what you would like to be doing 5 years from now. If you want innovation and something fluid and not so static choose Web design, but only if that is what you want. If you believe being a jr. executive five years from now is the ticket go with that. You are the one who will have to get up and do it 5 days of the week at least, so where do you find the most excitement?

nailpolishfanatic's avatar

@Stinley lol I just registered/applied. For the first school I chose business as the first choice and second choice is the arts/web designs/filmography. For the second school I chose IB.
I am happy with my choice and now I am exited for school lol… hope I get accepted to the first school.

nailpolishfanatic's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central That is so true!
I find the most excitement in pretty much anything… its very rare that I don’t enjoy doing something. I like challenges.
