Okay, I found the link. Thanks, @CaptainHarley . It says I am the “architect.” Only 1% of the population is INTP, so that’s me and you, @Haleth ! The description is so accurate, that it is scary. I can concentrate on something so deeply that I am oblivious to the outside world, and have received teasing about that from my teachers, family and co-workers my whole life.

What I think is interesting is that every time I’ve taken this test and compared results within a group (this will be, I believe, the 5th time), the group is almost overwhelmingly Introverted. So far here, I count 6 extroverts to 16 introverts. I’ve seen this uneven distribution hold true in every type of group from workplace to college class to internet site.

Also, out of all these times, I’ve only come across one other person whose result matched mine. We didn’t know each other well but were so astonished by our match that we became great friends because of it.

Hmm, that’s a pretty interesting observation. Maybe the internet attracts introverts?

I have taken these sort of tests so many times in the past, but I have a new-found love for my result as of today. The sites that come up with information about INFJ include words like “the confidant,” “the counselor,” and “the protector.” Maybe I’m in rare form, but something about reading into this today made me feel really good about myself. I think because I believe these things are very true about me, but I think that I forget to give myself credit for such positive traits in my day to day life.

Or perhaps extroverts are more noticeable.

But I also think the Internet, by its very nature, would attract more introverts.

I agree and I would be surprised if an online community were not more heavily weighted toward the introverted end of the scale. However, this imbalance (nearly ¾ of the respondents being introverted) holds true in real life groups also and most people are not surprised when they get an “I” result.

Apparently Teddy Roosevelt would have been an ENTP, which is very close to me as an ENFP. That makes my heart swell with delight.

About concentration, absolutely. When I was little I used to read hide books under my desk and read in class, and then I’d carry it to recess with me and keep reading, bring it home and read at the dinner table, and basically not be able to put it down until I was finished.

I’ve taken it three times now, and it keeps coming up as ISFP. I’m definitely not quiet and rserved, and I don’t keep my ideas and opinions to myself… so I’m pretty confused about that, LOL.

INFJ, which has been my result fairly consistently in the past, I think. I agree with that assessment. I also really like that it says that Nathaniel Hawthorne and Martin Luther King Jr. had the same personality type. How fancy. Plus, it recommended that I work in a library or a similar career, which is exactly what I’ll be doing soon! :)

I am curious: how many have taken it more than once? And if so, were the basic results the same or different? How much time went by between the two (or more) tests?

I’ve taken it twice, both done by a professional company with a six-year span. The points allotted for each category were slightly different, but the categories came out the same.

@Pied_Pfeffer I’ve taken a few different incarnations over the past three or so years and my result has always been ENFP.

Before late 2009 or so, my result would likely be drastically different.

@Pied_Pfeffer I’ve taken it 5 times over 11 years, the first time was at age 17 and it has always yielded the ENTP result. Sometimes the P/J switch is almost equal but the small extra point always goes to the P. The other 3 categories are never even close though; the ENT seems firm.

Last time I was professionally tested I was INTJ…and was consistently INTJ each time I was tested on at least 6 occasions over a dozen years. This test says I’m INFJ. Perhaps I’m growing more…emotional in my old age? Or, perhaps this test is a flawed subset of the larger tests I’ve had in the past…

@geeky_mama Thank you for sharing. I’m no expert, so take this with a grain of salt. The letters are a top-line category, while the accumulated numbers that put one into a specific category can be very low. @Blueroses alluded to an example with her fluctuation between the P and J.

There are only 16 letter combinations. There are not 16 personality types between every person on the planet. For every person on this thread that scores an I (Introvert), we have different levels of introversion.

This is why it is often recommended that we keep our scores to ourselves for self-enlightment, or in a controlled setting conducted by a professional trained on this subject. I don’t mind sharing my score here, but I certainly wouldn’t offer it during a job interview. Just because a person is introverted by nature doesn’t mean that they cannot be successful in a job that requires being extroverted.

I’ve taken many versions of this test, and I always come out as either ENTJ or ENFJ. I don’t set much store by any of these personality sorting theories, however.

According to the theory on Type, you have one type that you’re born with and it stays the same your entire life. That’s not to say that you stay the same person. Everyone develops their lesser functions as they mature. Not everyone always gets the same results, but the theory remains. I think I got INTJ a few years back, but ISTJ definitely fits me better.

One thing to remember is that MBTI only tells you your preferences. It’s like being right or left handed. You can do things with both hands, but you prefer doing it with a certain hand, and therefore are more comfortable doing it with your dominant one and are likely to work with that hand. But, everyone works with both hands in day to day life. So the four letter description of your type just tells you your preferences. Nobody is always an extrovert or always an introvert, etc.

@Blueroses: According to a book I have, the American population is about equally divided between introverts and extrovert, but there seems to be a strong bias towards extraverts in our culture. (I seem to remember another book I read recently saying the ratio was 1:2, but I can’t remember which number refers to which preference)

@geeky_mama: Apparently as INTJ’s mature, they begin to develop Feeling more (their 3rd preference). Most people are mainly run by their lead and auxiliary functions until around their 30s when they begin to develop the third function, while the least function develops in the late forties or fifties if ever. It could just be that you’ve developed your Feeling.

@Aqua That’s very interesting as it’s exactly what I would have expected based on how I see people in daily action. I would think Introversion and Extroversion would be at least equal even as preferences but I’ve never seen it work that way when it comes to this test. I think it’s fascinating that there is a strong preference for Introversion even if that is not the way everybody projects themselves.

I’m INFJ. There are not a lot of us out there but we tend to congregate together. At my work there are about 4 of us. It feels very harmonious, and like I’m among my people :o).

One of the things I read about INFJ was that we don’t find life easy, which was, for me, comforting as I don’t find life easy and it helped to know that there were others out there, also not finding life easy.

In the lead with 12 jellies is INTJ. Joint second with 6 each are ENFP and INFJ.

Amazingly, according to @Aqua‘s stats, the top two ESFJ and ESTJ which together make up 23–29% of the US population do not feature here. No jelly has come forward with this type.

Also interestingly the INTJ and INFJ types are the least common in general but most common jellies.

There’s a pattern emerging (or is it just my INFJ type seeing it…?)

When I took the test last year, I was an INFJ. Hmmm… No wonder I love being a jelly!

@Stinley I first took this test 5 years ago at another quasi social non Q&A forum, and there too was an overabundance of INTJ’rs and INFJ’s. I sense it is like minded people on a quest for knowledge and information.

Regarding the discussion on introvert vs. extrovert: society paints introverts as insecure, socially inept, timid and shy. That is really not an accurate description of an introvert. I don’t like very many people, and I have no desire to accumulate a large group of superficial “friends” to feel validated. I like peace and quiet. I enjoy alone time to lose myself in deep thoughts. To me, being introverted shows less personal insecurity, not more.

@CaptainHarley Of course! I love to spend time with my family and friends. In fact, my granddaughter and I are going to Disneyland next week (yay!) But I always still test out as an introvert.My circle of friends is small and intimate. I would say that my alone time vs. my social time is about 60/40, or maybe even 70/30, but it is that way because that is all the “gadding around” with my friends that I care to do.

I like the article that @Rarebear linked which pointed out how positive the MBTI descriptions are for each personality type. We’re all social creatures to some extent or we wouldn’t be interacting on Fluther. It’s fun to compare yourself to others and to have some basis for comparison, accurate or not. Do you prefer not seeing any type match yours and feeling different for that or is there a comfort and attraction in finding others who get the same result on this test.
Obviously, the MBTI doesn’t account for many factors in personality nor any life experiences that make us individuals. It’s rather like Vonnegut’s idea of a granfalloon: a group of people who outwardly choose or claim to have a shared identity or purpose, but whose mutual association is actually meaningless.

Of course, thinking that is true doesn’t stop me from saying things like “Oh, you’re a pisces? So am I!”

For some reason, 50% of the people I know seem to have Meyers-Briggs types that supposedly only 2% of the population shares.

Of course there is going to be a bias toward extroverts in our world because extroverts are the ones who are more likely to make themselves visible, in a variety of ways.

However, I don’t see it as “introvert versus extrovert”. They’re just different. Neither one is better than the other. I’ve come across unfair judgments against both. I’ve heard introverts claim that extroverts are stupid and superficial and I’ve heard extroverts claim that introverts are anti-social and have no personality. Both of those judgments are unfair and I don’t see it as a contest between the two, even if extroverts are more visible.

@DominicX Being an introvert, I admit that I am very sensitive about society’s negative view on introverts. I disagree that society also has a negative view on extroverts. Introversion is treated like a personality flaw by health care providers, psychologists and psychiatrists, who think it’s one of their life’s callings to stamp out all signs of introversion. So therefore, I do see it as “introvert vs. extrovert.”

That definitely makes sense; I’m sure the stigma against introversion is much stronger and more widespread. I just don’t think it’s an excuse to reverse the feeling that one is better than the other. I truly don’t believe that one is better than the other and it’s unfortunate that society has a such a negative view of introversion.

Is this a shorter version? I seem to remember the ones I took in psychology classes as being a bit longer.

One thing that I notice is that I’m basically right in the middle of extroverted and introverted, so tests often put me in different categories if I take them multiple times.

Maybe Fluther attracts a certain type… which is why we have percentages that are “lopsided” from society’s?

Every time I take this test, it comes out slightly different, but each time it does seem fitting to who I am at that moment in time. It’s usually IN-.

This time around, I scored INFJ and reading this description, I’d say it’s extremely fitting.

I am a very gentle, caring person who gets anxious with conflict and confrontation. I’m attracted to both science (for the exactness) and art. I live very much through my intuition, which is very strong and not something I can explain most of the time.

The thing that always strikes me about the MBTI is that the complete opposite personality types seem to describe me as well as the ones that come up on the test. This is especially true when I look at the Keirsey Temperament Sorter role variant descriptions associated with MBTI scores.

@SavoirFaire I just went back and read your previous post about how a large number of people seem to have Meyers-Briggs types that only like 1% of people have. I noticed that too, and it seems as though each of the types is “exceedingly rare” which doesn’t quite make sense to me.

As for me, everyone who knows me and who knows about Meyers-Briggs said I’m “totally an ENFP” and I “need to take the test.” So I did on a few websites, and low and behold, I scored ENFP each time.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard That is an interesting situation, but people guess my Western and Chinese zodiac signs correctly all the time. Apparently, I fit them perfectly. Trouble is, I grew up with a guy six hours older than me who didn’t fit them at all.

Now, MBTI and KTS portray themselves as more scientific than astrology, but I’ve still never been convinced they are worth taking seriously. There is no reliable research showing that one’s test results can be used to predict future behavior, for instance.

As for the notes about type rarity, I actually find them a bit laughable. There are 16 types, meaning an equal distribution would lead to each type representing only 6.25% of the population in the first place.

Coincidentally, I just took the full test again last week in my counseling class for returning students. It was interesting that out of 12 of us, we were dead even split in every category except “thinking/feeling”. That was 10Fs to 2Ts. The majority of the students are studying health care fields (nursing etc). The other T and I are the two Pharmacy Tech students.

The difference in explanation of introvert/extrovert, this time, is what I think is interesting and makes the results much more sensible.

Introvert does not mean shy or withdrawn all the time.
Extrovert does not mean always being comfortable reaching out.

The introvert refers to drawing your strength out of some solitary time. You need to be left alone to think, then you can discover answers and be perfectly fine presenting them to others.

The extrovert draws energy from interaction. Maybe sometimes feeling introverted, but the best ideas and best feelings of being ourselves comes when we are part of a group. We need people to bounce our thoughts off of, where the introverts come up with the best ideas alone.

An introvert can be outgoing, once s/he has the thought/energy in motion. An extrovert can become extremely withdrawn without having external sources.

They are basically the same thing. It’s only where you get your best feelings/feedback/ideas.

@Blueroses Yes, and us ENTPs are also known as the most introverted of the extroverts. I have joked for years about being an extroverted hermit. haha
I love to socialize and be “on” but I also enjoy lots of solitude. Extroverts are not ALWAYS “on”.

For years whenever I became quiet at social gatherings people would be hovering around asking me if I was alright. lol
I was always counted on to carry the energy at family gatherings and being quiet threw people off.

Haha, this is an old question, but there was a recent one where people were taking those Myers tests, and I got the same result then as I did in this one.
