@lucillelucillelucille I know, right? In a way it would have been more surprising if Nolan had ended it for sure in real life or a dream. The first time I saw that movie, it was with a friend who’s a big movie buff and we got really drunk beforehand. At the ending credits she loudly said, “UGHHHHHHH, are you shitting me?” in the crowded theater.
@King_Pariah Memento is great. :)
“Psychological thriller” seems like a pretty apt description for all three movies. One thing they all have in common is hints of an unreliable narrator. Actually, in Shutter Island it’s more than a hint. The character is either the victim of a massive conspiracy or full-blown delusional. I love unreliable narrators and the Dicaprio/Scorcese collaboration. For some reason it’s oddly fun to watch Dicaprio slowly lose his shit while speaking with an overdone Boston accent, popping pills, and smoking like a chimney.
I’m trying to think of other movies that might fit in this category. The Fountain, maybe? Or Sunshine? Sunshine doesn’t leave the ending open, but there’s a lot of sci-fi, some mental illness, and lots of dread. Fight Club is probably a psychological thriller, too, I’m thinking.
