How would you rank your top 5 Comic book Movie Adaptations?

“Great Question” (3points)

I’m a huge fan of graphic novels, and over the last decade there have been a list of adaptations to the silver screen. Some have been amazing, some have been terrible. What would be your top 5 comic—>film adaptations? It can be any comic or graphic novel (doesn’t have to be some kind of superhero), and any time (not just the last 10 years). A long list of possible movies that I can think of is below, followed by my personal top 5.

Some options (not all)
Batman (1989), Batman Returns (92), Batman Forever (95), Batman + Robin (97), Batman Begins (05), The Dark Knight (08), Superman (78), Superman 2 (80), Superman 3 (83), Superman 4 (87), Superman Returns (06), The Crow (94), The Punisher (89), The Punisher (04), Punisher: War Zone (08), 30 Days of Night (07), 300 (07), Blade (98), Blade 2 (02), Blade Trinity (04), Cat Woman (04), Daredevil (03), Elektra (05), Fantastic Four (05), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (07), From Hell (01), Ghost Rider (07), Green Lantern (11), Constantine (05), Hellboy (04), Hellboy: The Golden Army (08), A History of Violence (05), Hulk (03), The Incredible Hulk (08), Iron Man (08), Iron Man 2 (10), Jonah Hex (10), Judge Dredd (95), Kick Ass (10), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (03), The Losers (10), The Mask (04), Men in Black (97), Red (10), Road to Perdition (02), The Rockateer (91), Scott Pilgrim vs The World (10), Sin City (05), Spawn (97), Spider Man (02), Spider Man 2 (04), Spider Man 3 (07), The Spirit (08), Surrogates (09), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (90), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Secret of the Ooze (91), TMNT 3 (93), Thor (11), Timecop (94), V for Vendetta (06), Watchmen (09), X-Men (00), X-2 (03), X-Men:The Last Stand (06), Wolverine (09), X-Men: First Class (11)

(ok thats not really a small list, lol)

My own picks:
5) V for Vendetta – Arguably the most political story on the list above (and in graphic novels all together). Great story, graphic/gritty, faithful adaptation until the end. The movie imo is better than the book here, but both leave you wanting more at the end… but its hard to deny the awesomeness of the story.
4) X-Men – Kick started the current comic book movie craze with studios. Showed you could adapt comic books to be more realistic and marketable to more than the comic book niche. Not to mention I love X-Men…
3) The Crow – The Original “gritty” comic book movie. Until the Crow it was all poppy bright colored nonsense. The Crow showed a comic book movie could be graphic, dark, and involve incredibly non-PG elements. Still a great movie to this day.
2) Scott Pilgrim vs The World – I really like this movie. Its sort of superhero, sort of comedy, sort of videogame-genre, sort of a lot of things. Its kind of a niche movie (if its your type of thing you’ll love it, otherwise you may just think meh), but a great movie imo.
1) The Dark Knight – What do you really say? This is the pinnacle of comic-based films. Its not directly based off a comic, though elements and threads are torn from multiple Batman comics (The Killing Joke for example), but its simply amazing.

Special Mentions: Superman, Batman(89), The Watchmen, Red, The Mask, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I haven’t seen very many but I did like the first Batman with Micheal Keaton.Spiderman was alright too.I am not crazy about his outfit though

Watchmen. Five times.

I was struck by how accurately the movie imitated certain panels, and by Jackie Earl Haley’s portrayal of Rorschach (almost as great as Heath Ledger as the Joker), as well as Patrick Wilson as Dan. The only thing that bugged me about the movie was the omission of the Black Freighter stuff, but I understand why it was left out. Hands down, it’s the best adaptation I’ve ever seen.

@Seelix Yah The Watchmen was pretty good. As far as loyalty to the source material its probably a runaway #1. It didn’t crack my top 5 cuz while its an awesome epic story, it just isn’t in my top 5, lol.

@SavoirFaire Ohh its an adaptation, just not a direct one. It borrows very heavily from a few graphic novels, most importantly “The Killing Joke.”

@tedd I don’t think there is such a thing as an indirect adaptation. The Dark Knight makes great use of what some of the best Batman writers have added to the franchise, but it does not transfer any particular work from the page to the screen. If the question were “how would you rank your top 5 movies based on comic books?” then I would have placed The Dark Knight on my list; and if that was your actual intention in asking the question, then perhaps I will post a different list. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with answering the question loosely, but I chose to answer it more strictly.

3 Spiderman (first one)
4 Xmen First Class
5 Kick Ass

@filmfann xmen last stand? Seriously? that was almost as bad as spiderman 3….

tedd's avatar

@SavoirFaire Have you read the Killing Joke? lol

And I should have worded the question differently, by based off of I simply meant characters and such based off of comics, not direct stories. Hence the inclusion of TMNT, or Iron Man, or a litany of others on the list.

Seelix's avatar

Yeah, most comic book movies are not direct adaptations, with a couple of exceptions (mainly those based on oneshot graphic novels, like Watchmen or V for Vendetta). Origin stories are often picked and chosen from different “versions” or “universes”. Marvel’s Ultimate universe, for example, is very different from the original universe, and from what I’ve seen, the Marvel movies often take a lot of inspiration from these “rebooted” origins. When you’re dealing with characters that have been around for decades, like Spider-man, Superman or the X-Men, it’s pretty much guaranteed that changes will be made and that not all the fanboys will be happy.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@tedd Fair enough.

And yes, I’ve read The Killing Joke. I’ve also read Year One, The Long Halloween, Gotham By Gaslight, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, The Dark Knight Returns, and numerous scattered Batman comics. The Dark Knight uses the nihilistic, “multiple choice past” Joker of The Killing Joke to great effect, but it uses elements of many other stories as well (particularly The Long Halloween).

V For Vendetta and Sin City, I think.
