Can I use Apple's Motion as a "stand-alone" program?

“Great Question” (1points)

I’m looking for an After Effects competitor. I don’t shoot or edit video; I like to animate – photos, designs, and the like. So that’s the thing – does Motion only import from Final Cut, or can I use it alone – meaning, importing my own images, etc.? I also want to animate text. I can do this with After Effects, but it’s maddeningly expensive! Does anyone have experience with 1, or both and can give me a “heads-up?”

I checked out the Apple forums and the answer seems to be yes, it can be used alone. You also might want to look into something like Pencil, though there are others. It a 2-D animation application available for the Mac and while it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, and may not be what you want or need but “it is” free so worth a try.

@lillycoyote – Thanks! I’ll check out pencil, although Motion does look quite capable. Appreciate it.
