Can .avi files be burned to a dvd?

I’ve been trying to burn .avi videos to a DVD, but every time I put them in the DVD it says that my DVD may not have the playback feature. I’m using iDVD to burn these files on a memorex DVD+R blank dvd.

How do I fix this problem?
