I have a HP Photosmart D110. It makes excellent pics, prints well, but it may be a little heavier than you want.

I have had many people recommend the Fujitsu ScanSnap to me. Check out the reviews. I’ve been tempted, but it’s a bit pricey.

A camera and a steady hand. Seriously once you’ve got the hang of it you can duplicate a text book in about 30mins. (I’m assuming that’s what the scanners for?)

I would not recommend a pen scanner. I have a Planon Docupen, and getting consistent results is tough, you have to manually roll the scanner across the paper slowly and steadily.

Scanners like the Snapscan, with document feeders are a lot better. I use a Visioneer Strobe 500 and it’s great (but pricey).

And @Lightlyseared is correct, a camera or phone camera could be the solution, especially for books.

Here’s a nifty DIY Camera Phone Copy Stand

I’m looking for something cheap that will do the job.

I don’t know of a portable that’s reliable. I have done what @Lightlyseared & @jaytkay have suggested and it’s worked well for me.

I just tried with my cheap camera and got tolerable results.
