Didn’t think I was going to leave a quip for this question, but then a (somewhat) logical explanation came to mind. I figured I might as well share it.
It’s easy to say the video is madness/strange/nonsensical/ostentatious without merit. But consider how it came to be. There was a real thought process that Gaga (& her House of Gaga Monsters) went through to come up with every element of the video. To them, there is a rhyme & reason to every detail. One idea flowed to the next. As for the audience. There will most likely be very few people who connect with it instantly. Give it time & you may be able to see more to it. I’ll probably watch it a few more times. When you consider the title of the song, You & I, the imagery makes sense.
I am reminded of the time I was lucky enough to visit a gallery showing a collection of Jackson Pollock. I’ve only ever seen his work in text books. I never really understood what was so special about the work. When I actually stood in front of the massive canvas hanging eye level on the wall. I was blown away. When you stand as close to the canvas, as Jackson Pollock himself stood, you start to feel the process. Your eyes & body move with all the streams & splatters of paint. There really is a beautiful movement to it. From a distance it may look a mess. His work was meant to be admired up close & personal.
Since the Pollock, I’ve learned to not be so quick to judge. Otherwise I may miss out on something really special.
sidenote: Gaga is no stranger to country. She remade Born This Way into a country-esque song earlier this year
