I listen to music from the 30s up until now, so I would guess it falls somewhere in there. “Oldies” are my favorite songs to listen to, always have been, and my radio is permanently tuned to the local oldies station. I don’t really know much in the way of children’s songs, but I’m sure I know at least a few cartoon theme songs. I wouldn’t say that I like them, though. I have never heard Justin Bieber. :)

I have a very eclectic music taste, but I guess I take a little pride in the fact that it generally doesn’t include recent pop music. I love me some Yusuf Islam, Alphaville, Iron Maiden, Johnny Cash… so a lot of classics from a lot of genres (including pop in their respective hey day I’ll admit) and a lot of alternative and indie that are currently out there, but no real pop that would get played on the top 40 count down radio stations for example from maybe the last 10 years or so.

However, there is an exception. I absolutely cannot get enough of Katy Perry. I don’t know what it is but I friggin’ love her and I’m not ashamed to blast her albums from my speakers quite regularly :P

Ska and reggae….that is pretty far removed from my white bread, prairie state, urban upbringing I have had.

I am in the my early 30’s, I have a great passion for music from the 50’s and 60’s, even though I wasn’t even around then. I also like a few songs from the 80s.

Iranian trance. For some reason I have an ipod full of the stuff.

Hard to say. When you put it like that. What do I like and I shouldn’t like. hard to answer this one.

I worship Lady Gaga, which goes against my punk rock roots. I’ve always had disdain for music that isn’t created by actual instruments. But Gaga has such soul and man, can she sing.

One example would be gospel tunes, like Will the Circle be Unbroken.

I consider stuff like the above to be quite diverse from other stuff that I really like, such as Hendrix, the Doors, Mothers of Invention, and especially the Rolling Stones.

The Stones are one of the least gospel prone groups that I listen to. Some of their tunes, such as Dancing with Mr D, and Sympathy for the Devil; and two of their albums, Goat’s Head Soup and Their Satanic Majesty’s Request, are strong indicators of this.

I love classical and the hard rock of the 70s. But I also really like surprise, surprise folk music from any era. Like Libby Roderick.

Certain songs can be catchy and get stuck in my head from all eras and genres. However, I can’t get enough of music from the 1920’s-1930’s. There is a certain romantic appeal about that era that I can’t avoid liking. That, and my old fashionedness is comfortable listening to music that doesn’t include barking noises, guttural palpitations, or murder-suggesting screams.

That said, I am able to enjoy just those types of music as well at times.. given the proper mood.

My musical taste is all over the spectrum. Lately, though, I seem to prefer indy musicians on YouTube that nobody has ever heard of…

Some of my favorites.

On my tv, there are a number of music channels (no picture, though). My favorite station plays this sort of music. I like playing it, living in my 150 year old house (with tall stained glass window) and I have candles lit everywhere.:)

I made a cd for my Mom awhile back with this sort of music on it. She used to pick up my (then) 2 year old niece and dance with her. My niece still loves that cd).

I have to admit that one day I was cruising down the sunny streets of san diego, clicked on the radio and began to really enjoy a song. It wasn’t until months later that I found out it was actually Britney Spears who sang it. Learning this triggered my gag reflex.

I love songs from the 20’s straight thru to todays music.
I don’t care for modern country, or rap, but I like most of the rest.

I am 44 too and can’t get enough of 70’s and early 80’s’ disco.
Very ‘wrong’ but damn good!

I listen to a lot of music from the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s, which of course were periods of time when I was not around (though it would’ve been cool if I had been). Also, given that I like classical music like that, it might be unexpected that I also listen to Lil Wayne, dubstep, mainstream pop/R&B, etc. Classical is my favorite genre, but I listen to a whole lot of other music, some of which could be considered the polar opposite of classical.

I like Trance, Progressive, and similar music, and I didn’t get into those until I was in my early-30s. My favorite band lately has been Abney Park (I just got their RPG and am waiting for Captain Robert’s novel, The Wrath of Fate to come out.). But my tastes have always been a bit odd, and some of the stuff I used to play at high volume at my old workplace was there to make people wonder. Imagine going from Steve Miller to Drowning pool to Trans-Siberian Orchestra to Darude to Wagner to a Village People megamix followed by some Eminem.

The only music I dislike are anything from 1880–1965, and Country.

I don’t think I should or shouldn’t have any music I cannot or should like due to race, age or whatever. My range goes from opera, that really blows their mind, to jazz, swing, ragtime, Sinatra, hard rock, heavy metal, which also blows their mind, reggae, classical, etc. I never seen much reason to avoid any type of music if I wanted to listen to it.

I’m 14 and love Jazz music. Even Adult Alternative like Jason Mraz. Also, I love classic rock, like Fleetwood Mac. I’m really not up to date with present day music. Most of it anyway.

I’m on a big Django Reinhardt kick right now. Throw in some Son House, Frank Sinatra, Queens Of The Stone Age, Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, and Aesop Rock.

My head is a mess.

I like a lot of the songs the Glee cast does. This is the only thing I consider a ‘guilty pleasure’. I’m not even embarrassed about having songs from the Powerpuff Girls on my ipod. Glee? Pretty embarrassing.

The music from Sister Act is the absolute shit, along with the movie. I had a mix CD with several of the songs from the movie and knowing I’m an atheist, a friend thought that was weird, but it doesn’t have to be so much about the lyrics/content. The music is just so catchy and enjoyable and emotional. In fact, I have a few songs in my iTunes that mention God, but I don’t think needing to believe in God or relate to the lyrics of ANY song is necessary to enjoy it. Like this one from Mumford and Sons – it’s a beautiful song.

And I, too, have enjoyed a few songs from Glee. Like this and this. I usually prefer things more melancholy and not so….“happy”.

Is there such music? I mean that I shouldn’t listen to? It’s music, it’s for everyone.

I’m not exactly sure how being 47 means that I “shouldn’t” like some music. I suppose, given my age, I shouldn’t like Lady Gaga but I do.

Hard question to answer. Using age as a reference to categorize what causes me to like music is hard.

However I seem to be stuck in the same rut of music that I already have and know, ‘60’s – 80’s rock. After that, for me, that’s when good rock dried up. I should look around more but I just don’t. It’s mainly background filler when I’m doing other things. Maybe someday I will actually make time to really listen to music. Too much uncertainty happening right now with us.

I mainly prefer classical music, earlier jazz, Broadway musicals and choral music. I recently had the opportunity to sing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Freddie Mercury. I enjoyed it very much. Some members of the group that sang that program said, “What’s ‘Queen’?” Others never heard of ‘Londonderry Air.’ We learn to appreciate each other’s tastes.
And, @jude, Ebb Tide was part of my favorites list too once upon a time.

@Jude – If you like the Andrews Sisters, you should check out the Puppini Sisters. They’re contemporary, and sing in close harmony. Here is their version of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. They also cover modern songs, like I Will Survive and Walk Like an Egyptian.

And they’re gorgeous, too, which doesn’t hurt :)

So yeah, Britney Spears. I actually like a lot of pop. It’s so flashy and catchy, I can’t help it. But people who know me raise an eyebrow, since I’m supposed to be all moody and fuck the norm. And because I’m not 15 anymore. (but people still raised eyebrows back when I was haha) But eh, whatever, I like what I like.

I absolutely love music—20’s, 30’s, Sammy Davis Jr., Sinatra, all the way through Prince, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Flock of Seagulls, and other 80’s music, to Mraz, Gorillaz, Papa Roach, Marilyn Manson—My favorite country’s always been Garth Brooks and Alabama- and like Sugarland. I know the lyrics from about 25 musicals by heart. I even enjoy Yanni and classical music and some Eminem. That’s not even all of it.

Actually, according to popular belief, I shouldn’t like ANY of this music, at all. I’m profoundly deaf. I couldn’t hear an airplane from 25 feet away.

Hmmm. I might have to eat my words. I’m just going through the top 40 Australia countdown right now and I’m actually surprised at some of the stuff in there. Interesting.
