Would you be more forgiving of typos if you knew that the post was written from a tiny phone?

“Great Question” (5points)

I still don’t know why the almighty iPhone is singled out – and it states loud and clear when something is “asked from it” – yet not from all the other smartphones, but digress.

After trying out my daughter’s – and finding it way too small and awkward and slow to type with – I would be much more forgiving if I knew that a post had been written via smartphone.

We all know the score – there won’t be any new gadgets here soon. But I think it would be cool if posts said “sent from teeny tiny smartphone so forgive my typos, mon.”

I could be wrong, but I don’t think it’s so much that iPhones are singled out, just that when using the i.fluther.com on their phone, it states they are posting from an iPhone, even if it’s any other phone.

I’m pretty forgiving all around for typos, so being on a phone doesn’t make much of a difference for me.

Judi's avatar

I am forgiving anyway, but most of my posts ARE from an iphone and have a few typos. It seems like my “questions” with typos always get moderated, but my answers don’t.

@Seaofclouds Grasshopper!

I have posted from my wifes SmartPhone, and have said that I was, since I knew I wouldn’t be able to double check the spellings and all.
My regular computer is weak, a result of a virus a few months back. I sometimes want to apologize for that, as well.

HungryGuy's avatar

I’m fairly forgiving anyway. Sure, if someone asks for criticism, I’ll offer it. But typos don’t bother me all that much.

Coloma's avatar

I concur with being forgiving anyway.
Unless the writing is so atrociously bad one cannot make sense of it, typos happen, and while I try to catch mine, I don’t like grandiose criticisms from self appointed grammar cops.

As long as I can read and make sense of the post, it’s fine, whether it comes from a computer, phone or a fax machine from 1985.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Nope. I will still judge. :D

stardust's avatar

As long as I can understand the text message, I don’t mind care.

jonsblond's avatar

I never understood why someone would get their panties in a bunch over silly typos on the internet. As long as it isn’t text speak, I really don’t care.

I do point out mistakes to other like other point mine out. I do simpatize with those who are using Fluther from a phone ^^

People stutter and hem and haw in real life so I take no umbrage at imperfect posts done on a tiny phone or massive desk top for that matter unless it was from F.U.I…Fluthering Under the Influence. ;)

rebbel's avatar

I am not more or less forgiving.
I think smartphone keyboard apps have built-in spell checkers, so the contributions could/should be without errors.

incendiary_dan's avatar

Nope, just get on a real damn computer. Besides, if I can type clearly at 90 wpm on my netbook, on which the keyboard is smaller than one of my hands, people can take their damn time and write a decent message on their phone. Or, as I said, get on a computer if you can’t do it on the phone.

Judi's avatar

@incendiary_dan , we are not all as perfect as you though.

incendiary_dan's avatar

@Judi I try to remember that, I really do. :P

I forgive typos for many reasons, typing on an iPod or whatever being just one of them.

The grammar corrections, the “grammar police” of fluther have been (so far) the only negative aspect of fluther for me. I bristle everytime I see it and think it’s beyond snooty.

@incendiary_dan Bringing my laptop to work would be a bad idea even if I could get wifi there. On the other hand, my Droid X is easy to secure (nobody will reach into my pocket when I’m not looking) and it has 3G connectivity. Guess which one I will use during my breaks…

I find that typos are more common from iPhones than from Androids, and I can think of a couple of reasons why based on teh issues I’ve had with iOS4. That said, if I didn’t learn to tolerate minor errors like that, I would hate everyone… more than I already do.

Judi's avatar

But if it weren’t for typos, we would never have damnyouautocorrect.com, and the world would have less laughter.

tranquilsea's avatar

The iPhone is terrible for changing your word on you. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to back up and retype it because it’s changed.

While I like things to be spelled properly I’m not a big fan of correcting people for a couple of reasons: firstly, I make mistakes so who am I to talk? secondly, correcting detracts from the original question.

No.

@ Judi

I agree! Some of the best humor can be found in grammar and typos!
Here’s a great example from just the other day!

Someone posted asking if eating African Mangoes their spelling had weight loss properties.
At first glance I thought it said ” Has anyone heard of the African MONGOOSE diet?” haha

Perfect comedy for me, yep, The African Mongoose diet….lose weight fast eating Cobras. ;-)

jerv's avatar

@tranquilsea That is why I like Android; it will just stop and ask what word you are shooting for.

jonsblond's avatar

@tranquilsea correcting detracts from the original question

It does. I’ve seen many questions get derailed due to arguments because someone decided to correct another. A PM would be more helpful, don’t you think? I have a feeling those who like to correct others publicly have a superiority complex.

Buttonstc's avatar

It’s not necessarily the tinyness of the iPhone that’s the problem for me. It’s the fact that it thinks it knows better than I which word I want to use.

Everytime I write the word “thus” it chooses the word “this” instead. Totally screws up the sentence.

I don’t mind it correcting wrong spellings. It’s when it substitutes other words for the one that I spelled correctly to begin with. Grrrrr.

rooeytoo's avatar

I forgive everyone for everything! (I am in a magnanimous mood tonite)

Stinley's avatar

I got a smartphone recently and will now be soooo forgiving. My sausage fingers are not suited to this tiny screen but since I stopped work and am in the midst of moving, my phone is my only internet access. @Seaofclouds thank you for that link. I was struggling with the browser version and was put off coming here:-o
