Who is your favourite singer/songwriter?

I’m in need of getting some new music. Thought I’d like to get some suggestions from you guys!

I’ve always loved Rufus Wainwright with a passion. His sister is pretty darn good too. I’m also liking Sia at the moment.

Damien Jurado and Richard Buckner, both prolific and amazing, top my list although there are several more. But, Bob Dylan is the man, all-time, hands down. If you’re not familiar with Jurado or Buckner, give them a listen…I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Richard Thompson and Loudon Wainwright III (Rufus’ dad) – two old warhorses who are as good as ever, or in the case of Wainwright, getting better with age. Nick Drake was awesome, too, as was Laura Nyro. Oh yeah, Ron Sexsmith – saw him live a few months ago and he brought the house down. You can’t really go wrong with any of ‘em…

Bob Dylan is amazing. He wrote so much for himself and others.
Same for Prince.
I am a huge U2 fan for their lyrics (amongst other things).
Bruce Springsteen does a great job I think.

I love the late Izrael Kamakawiwo’ole (IZ). You’ve no doubt heard his “Over the Rainbow” in the background of several tv shows and even the intro played during a commercial. Brings tears!

Although Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service and a few other things) isn’t a traditional ‘great voice’ or even a ‘great songwriter’, I really like how down to earth he sounds when he sings. He seems approachable and human. And the songs are relatable and have lovely harmonies.

I would also like to second Chris Martin.

Oh! Oh! Danny Elfman is THE MAN. (Oingo Boingo is such a great group…it’s too bad Danny Elfman won’t ever be getting back ‘on the stage’, so to speak.)

Sufjan Stevens.
Beautiful lyrics, musical composition, harmonies, evocation of emotions. This man understands human tendency, music, love, passion, and words and it really shows. Not many artists these days have EVERY album be a concept album like him.
