@DrBill that’s because England doesn’t have rabies. If you’re transporting a dog from the US to a place that has rabies, even if it’s only a couple cases in the past few years (like Finland), you don’t have to quarantine your dog. At least I didn’t have to.
@lemming If it’s possible, I would probably get a small dog that can be taken onto the passenger compartment of an airplane. That is, IF you aren’t going somewhere where the dog will need to be quarantined, and IF you don’t live somewhere where the dog will have to be quarantined when you get back. Also, I would not buy from a petshop, but would get the dog from a good, reliable breeder or an animal shelter. You don’t want to support a place like this. When looking for the right place to buy the dog from (if you decide on buying), here are some signs something is amiss. A good, responsible breeder will want you to come to their place so they can match you up with the right dog. They will find the perfect companion.
