Is there a way to have a matrix as an exponent?

Is there a way to have a matrix as the exponent of either a number or another matrix? I know that it is possible to raise a matrix to power of, say, three by multiplying the matrix by itself three times, but what about the reverse case where you raise three to the power of a matrix?

This is NOT homework.
