I don’t think either band is better. Music is too subjective for that comparison to really make sense. I personally prefer Guster, however, as Wilco has never really done it for me.
@GabrielsLamb Define “better drummer” and “better bassist.” Also, it depends on what show you go to. Every time I’ve seen Guster, they’ve been very tight.
@CunningLinguist I suppose it’s a mood thing for me? Guster to me is quicker and brighter, and faster tempo isn’t always better music. To me because of the tempos they tend to keep consistant with, it looses feeling for me. I guess it’s a girl thing? Like I said though they are really so similar at times it’s difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins but Wilco has different “feelings” evoked for me… And I can’t really describe it much better than that. From a female perspective (among other things I wont get into here) Wilco is “prettier”
I think a musician technically might prefer Guster. A music LOVER would probably opt more toward Wilco? But all that being said I really do love both. I just prefer Wilco.
Interesting results so far, I see. Gab, it appears your having fun and are excited with your personal picks. And I do agree on some of those comments you made, however Guster can get me going with those ‘tempos’ (there not all bad.) I guess, for me, its a guy thing. Yep.
@GabrielsLamb I don’t think it’s a girl thing. It was an ex-girlfriend who got me into Guster and she doesn’t like Wilco at all for some reason. Then again, she has that typical hipster “I like Guster, but I don’t like anything off of Lost and Gone Forever because that album was popular” attitude. I make no apologies for liking ”Barrel of a Gun” and ”Rainy Day.”
@Mantralantis Probably… If you love music that would be number 1 (and one of the most important ones)
I love Feist. That duet rocked!
But as for Tom Watts, I liked him before that but I wasn’t familiar exactly with who he was as a musician, the movie and that particular song hit it home for me, so I suppose tenchically I have always liked him, but I haven’t always LOVED him to clarify.
@fundevogel Brian still plays with his hands in concert, but he switches it up based on the song. He added the drum kit (a) to protect his hands and (b) because he felt limited when he could only play hand drums.
I’ve never been an active listener of either, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Guster because Ben Kweller performed the vocals for one of their songs, I Hope Tomorrow is Like Today.
Wilco takes home the trophy for Highest Number of Quality Songs.
Guster has to win for Best Song by Either Band: “What You Wish For”
The above Guster song was part of the soundtrack in the 2001 Kevin Kline movie “Life As A House”. Right in the beginning, Kline is quietly calling his dog…..“Here, Guster….Here, Guster”......(very clever)
