I Am My Own Wife is a brilliant one-man play about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a transvestite and furniture collector/museum owner who lived in Germany through Nazism and Communism. It’s an extremely demanding task for the actor, who plays not only Charlotte but many, many other characters. It’s a fascinating viewing experience as the story becomes more and more complex and questions are raised.
I also recall a stage adaptation of Kafka’s Metamorphosis by an Icelandic group that was enchanting, and one of Animal Farm (I found a review) that I loved, even though I hated studying the book in school.
And then there’s Sylvia, a play that starred Sarah Jessica Parker as the title character, actually a dog. There’s a synopsis on Wikipedia. I’m not a dog person at all, but it is a very sweet show, and I’m sure those who like dogs would love it.
