Recipes, descriptions, all are welcome here! Something special your family does? Do you have an Uncle Stu who makes mashed potatoes to die for? An Aunt Chris who has to rein in the brothers from putting too much brandy in something? The best cranberry sauce in the universe? I’m salivating in anticipation!

I do make the best cranberry sauce in the universe! lol
It converts even diehard cranberry sauce haters.
It is a 140 year old family recipe that includes apples.
Deeee-licious, will be canning a bunch soon for friends and neighbors. It is great with pork and poultry and I make it for both T’s-Giving and Xmas.

@ANef_is_Enuf : Because KatawaGrey is vegetarian, I make it so it’s a main course in and of itself. My mother always worries that K will go hungry on Thanksgiving…silly

My mother makes an insane variety of vegtable dishes. Never less than a dozen different things. I usually have to have two plates or refill one twice.

My mother’s banana bread and my uncle’s mashed potatoes. Sadly, I’m not going home for Thanksgiving this year. On the bright side, however, both show up at the family’s Christmas feast as well.

Mmmmm, this questions makes my stomach grumble.

I like cranberry sauce a lot. The real kind with cranberry chunks in it. I can’t get enough of it. I also really like the green bean casserole with the cream of mushroom (?) and crunchy things on top. And the sweet yams with brown sugar, cinnamon, marshmallows and apple slices. And the zucchini casserole! Oh and the PIEEESSS!!

Oyster stuffing. My dad loves oysters and only gets them at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Stuffing at Thanksgiving and stew after the Sunday School Christmas Program on Christmas Eve.

Giblet stuffing, exactly the way my parents made it! We go to my husband’s aunt’s for Thanksgiving and she makes a very good sausage stuffing. Then at home I roast a turkey just for us and make stuffing the BEST way!

Mashed sweet potatoes. Pumpkin pie.

But nothing compares to mashing all the leftovers onto a sandwich every day for a week after Thanksgiving. :)

My Mom makes killer cranberry sauce with fresh cranberries and orange juice.

I make a pretty good vegetarian mushroom gravy.

I’m looking to create or find a recipe that is similar to the traditional green bean casserole (you know the kind with the Campbell’s mushroom soup and the French fried onions) only I want to make a home made bechamel sauce and use artichoke hearts instead of green beans. And I want to put panko bread crumbs on top, plus the onions, but Trader Joe’s fried onions are way better than the greasy ones made by French’s.

I would also like to make a melange of roasted vegetables with sweet potatoes, parsnips, rutabagas and mushrooms.

And maybe a puree of roasted parsnips and celery root. Like This only I’d probably use non-fat plain yogurt instead of sour cream.

First of all, I love this question because I am looking forward to Thanksgiving so much! I guess I’m one of the few people who actually loves cranberry sauce that comes in the shape of a can. That stuff is a Thanksgiving staple for me. Sometimes I like to eat the turkey with the cranberry…jelly. Sounds gross, I know.

@global_nomad I’ve never met a cranberry sauce that I didn’t like. My Mom makes fresh sauce, but I also love and have a fond memory for the stuff that plops out of a can that my Grandma used to serve. I love it all.

@global_nomad My sister wasn’t going to get the infamous can of cranberry sauce last year because she said no one eats it. I told her we have to have it! We’ve always had it plopped on a plate and sliced between the can molds that encircle it LOL

I make my own cranberry sauce as well. It’s so easy. The simple way is buy a bag of cranberries, dump them in a pot, 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar and stir. The cranberries pop like corn kernels and after awhile it just melds together. Each year I make it a little differently, sometimes I use apple juice, orange juice etc in place of water and I add diced apple and or raisins and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

I also make candied yams every year which my kids love. I make a maple pork sausage dressing that is always the first thing gone and collard greens cooked the Southern way, with Ham Hocks, sweet potato pie and pumpkin pie. These things are a must, other things can change like mashed potatoes or baked macaroni and cheese. I love green bean casserole but my kids don’t like it. :-(

@Raven_Rising I’ve never made pecan pie before and I was hoping to try it this Thanksgiving, but I was wanting something a little different. I think your recipe sounds delicious! I’m going to try it.

It’s the easiest ever. Oysters, saltine crackers, and a little salt and pepper to taste. Excellent flavors come after that.

One of my aunts makes Empanadas as an appetizer before her traditional Thanksgiving meal.

My Grandma used to make this delicious salad made with cottage cheese, lime Jello mix (for flavor and color, not to make a Jello mold, which is also pretty cool) with pineapple chunks and pecans. I’m having a nostalgic moment here, so forgive me for a sec, Sniff.

My Mom makes everything fantastic! My Dad’s favorite, is Mom’s applesauce. But her chocolate pecan pie is pretty damned amazing too! Imagine a fudgey layer, below the traditional pecan pie, layer. It’s to die for.

One year, in which my family went to my aunt and uncle’s home in another city, I had to stay home, because I worked that day. I realized that I had never really learned the art of Thanksgiving recipes from my family, so my Mom wrote down and coached me over the phone how to make mashed potatoes, how to properly spice the sweet potatoes, how to make a pumpkin pie and how to make both cranberry sauce and apple sauce. I’d watched her and my Grandma a million times, and sort of helped, but until that year, I really had no idea what I was doing. That was over 20 years ago.

It still amazes me how my Mom and her mother before her, were able to know how to cook a turkey and mashed potatoes and green bean casserole and dinner rolls and sweet potatoes and make gravy and get it all to come out perfect, and at the same time. It still boggles my mind that my Mom is able to instinctively know how to time her dishes just right so that they can be prepared and everything comes out perfectly. And without evening batting an eyelash.

But back in the day, my Mom and Grandmother were expected to know how to cook and they were kind of forced to learn, whether they wanted to or not. I, on the other hand, was never expected to cook, but I was generously allowed to cook and so therefore, I became entranced with the whole thing. So for her it was a necessity, and for me it’s a luxury for which I will always be grateful.

You should see us, when we have Thanksgiving at our house. Both me and my Mom have our favorite psychedlic 1960’s era aprons that we’ve had since I was a kid. My Dad’s 2 tasks, are to help put the leaf in the table and to go out to the pantry to retrieve the can of black olives for the relish tray.

@Raven_Rising I just bought the corn syrup yesterday. The grocery store was sold out of it by the Tuesday before Thanksgiving last year. I’m prepared this time! =)

I like walnut pie better than pecan. My mom forgot to get the pecans one year before they ran out and made a chocolate walnut pie instead of pecan. We haven’t let her go back to pecans since.

@WestRiverrat I’ve never heard of anyone doing it with walnuts, although, now that you mention it, I’m not sure why not. I love walnuts!

Now I’m craving walnuts.
