What was the last book you read because someone told you how much you would love it but you ended up hating it?

“Great Question” (2points)

Inspired by this question by Jillthetooth, I got to thinking about book recommendations that didn’t work out so well for me. I had a friend recommend A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, I didn’t even make it through the first chapter. What book that came highly recommended did you loathe?

A Confederacy of Dunces. Oh! And also Wuthering Heights.

@dappled_leaves I couldn’t get through Wuthering Heights! I have tried countless times and I just can’t get past the first chapter!

Probably The Case For Christ. When I came out as an atheist I told my more worried relatives that they could each give me one, and only one, book in an attempt to re-convert me and that I would read it. On the condition that I could give them one atheist book and they would read it.

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin… just could not get past the first chapter or so… (Have read Wuthering Heights 7 or 8 times though, so I guess that balances out? WH improves once it gets into the story proper – Nelly is a better narator than the houseguest…)

The Political Mind: A Cognitive Scientist’s Guide to Your Brain and Its Politics by George Lakoff.

It was basically a hypocritical, partisan circle-jerk disguised as neuroscience.

My younger sister highly recommended City of Ember three years ago. Probably got over halfway, but just could not get any further. Considering it’s a kid’s book I really should have been able to make it…

My hubby wanted me to read some Michael Savage fiction he really liked but when I tried the first 15 pages, I thought it was weak and was actually irritated by the writing style. It’s not often I won’t finish a book, any book!

A niece recommended Twilight several years ago. Since she is a voracious reader and we both enjoyed the Harry Potter series, I read it. Gad…

It seems to come up about every decade or so that someone highly recommends Atlas Shrugged as a must read, and until the most recent time I always gave it a try, thinking that as I was older and my perspective had changed I might like it this time. Nope. Nopity nope nope nope. Can’t do it. I force myself through the first 50 pages and can’t do it. I no longer will try.

@Pied_Pfeffer, I looked at the Twilight series several years ago. I read one or two chapters, expecting it to become better. I’d heard so many people rave about it. I finally had to stop. I couldn’t believe how pathetic it was. I absolutely agree.
