Wow! I had never heard that song. I watched the You Tube video and really enjoyed it. Thanks for introducing it to me.
The beginning of the song:
Down to the earth I fell
With dripping wings
Heavy things won’t fly
And the sky might catch on fire
And burn the axis of the world
is clearly a reference to Icarus, the Greek myth about the man who made wings of wax, but they melted in the sun and he plummeted to his death.
She then goes on to say she prefers the night:
That’s why I prefer a sunless sky
To the glittering and stinging in my eyes
In the chorus and the subsequent verse, she talks about how weightless (I feel so light) she feels.
I think the metaphor here is the the night frees her from the cares of the day. That in the night she feels free to explore the possibilities.
Finally, she says she always wants to feel that way: Tonight and the rest of my life
