Have you ever discovered how great a band is years and years after their peak popularity?

I’ve heard of Oasis before, and I heard a few singles randomly, but I had no idea how great they were until now when I actually had time to sit and listen to their music. So, when I get home, I’m going to use all of my iTunes gift cards on them.

I’m not going to count the multitude of bands I like who’s popularity peaked before I was born. It’s not like I had a choice to be late on liking bands like that. The bands that I was just slow to get into would be: Blur, Depeche Mode, NWA, Pavement, Sneaker Pimps, The Dandy Warhols, and The Libertines.

The first two records by Billy Joel are bad ass.
The very first Bob Seger album is rock n roll and space.
Soul Aslyums first record was raw and punk.
Traffics first record was great also.

I am not in to much main flow stuff so this is a hard question to answer.

Whenever the current music scene is disappointing, I just go back to the music I grew up with looking for bands I missed or only heard on the radio. I’ve discovered or re-discovered a few bands this way, including Cracker.

I had stopped listening to the radio when my kids were really little as I was chasing after them 24/7. The only band from around that time that I’ve recently come to appreciate is Coldplay.

Due my age, that happens to me all the time. I like all the music that was out when my dad was in his twenties, and yes, Oasis and Queen are just two that I discovered and loved. Bob Marley, Elton John, Micheal Jackson ( though strictly, he was still in the spotlight), Frank Sinatra, Van Morrison etc…

I never even heard of him until I saw the movie Elizabethtown. He had a song on the soundtrack.

Then, a very generous fellow jelly sent me copies of all his albums (god bless you Gary – whatthefluther).

Now I’m a huge fan.

I grew up in the 80’s so it was all that Born in the USA stuff (which I could not stand) and I wasn’t interested enough to explore it further. In college I heard Nebraska and everything was different after that. To this day it’s one of my top albums.

Yes, I went to see America earlier this year and was blown away by their live performance. The 70’s and my childhood and summertime came roaring back! They may be older, but they have amazing vocal harmonies!
