I heard from a relative that lives in NYC that there are two types of rentals – ones you get through a real estate agent and ones you get by paying more each month, but no fee up front. The increased amount is about $300 per month.
Maybe you should enlist the help of a realtor in Manhattan.
The only problem with a realtor is that a building is going to want at least one month’s security, and the realtor is going to charge one month’s security, and now I hear they often want the last two month’s rent up front (since many people don’t pay at the end, thinking “just use my security as rent” and as a way to not get screwed out of their security) and since a rent is going to probably be a few thousand, you are looking at a possible $10,000 outlay if you go with realtor. My relative who lives in NYC has two roommates. Consider that. They each pay over $1000 rent, total rent over $3000 monthly. That’s just the rent, includes heat and hot water, does not include cable, etc.
