“Start over” is such a vague idea. What is it that you want to leave behind? I think you can leave people behind. You probably can’t leave a criminal record behind. But you can leave behind the people who remember you have a record.
You can leave your friends behind and your family behind, but probably not totally. You will still go home and visit them, and they might visit you.
But you can start anew with new friends and none of them have to know anything about your past except what you tell them. You’ll want to tell them most of where you come from, though, if you want them to become good friends. You can hide your past, but why? Hiding it doesn’t unmake it. Eventually you want people who love you because of your past, not in spite of it. They love you because they appreciate what you’ve had to overcome. They can’t know that if you don’t tell them.
They say you can run, but you can’t hide. I think that’s because you are who you are, no matter what, and that can’t be separated from your history. So even though you hide at first, eventually you give your own self up because that is the only way you can be known and the only way you can be sure you are loved for yourself.
