What does this quote mean "But none of them owns the landscape. There is a property in the horizon which no man has but he whose eye can integrate all the parts, that is, the poet. This is the best part of these men’s farms, yet to this their warranty-deeds give no title"?

“Great Question” (2points)

The quote is from Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson and I’m trying to make this into a talking point but I’m not quite sure how to simplify it. Help!

I think he’s saying you can see and appreciate the beauty of nature but never own it?

What is the talking point that you wish to make? Emerson says it best. Are you trying to illustrate something?

@Adirondackwannabe I suppose I can see that, but perhaps a little more specific or deep?

@Earthgirl I’m not quite sure yet but I want to simplify the quote but not totally dumb it down… If that makes sense?

@ashleyvvv That’s quite the quote, it’s going to take me few to chew on that.

I read the full quote.

He is saying, as far as I understand, that there is something transcending the actual trees and land that is the province of the poet. It is what makes the heart soar. It is what inspires and uplifts. It is beyond mere appearances and reality. No man can own it. Only the young at heart can perceive it.

@Earthgirl That’s great thanks!

ashleyvvv I love Emerson. :)

That’s amazing. You nailed it. I can’t improve on that.

@Earthgirl he is so deep, sometimes a little hard to understand…

Lol, Earthgirl strikes again!!!

How about this quote, “The world thus exists to the soul to satisfy the desire of beauty.” What you guys think?

Earthgirl's avatar

ashleyvvv He was writing at a different time like Shakespeare. It’s hard sometimes to understand the conventions of speech which he used. But he is amazing. I love him. I bought a whole collection of his work at a flea market. He was a deep thinker.

I would have to see that quote in context.

@Earthgirl The world thus exists to the soul to satisfy the desire of beauty. This element I call an ultimate end. No reason can be asked or given why the soul seeks beauty. Beauty, in its largest and profoundest sense, is one expression for the universe. God is the all-fair. Truth, and goodness, and beauty, are but different faces of the same All. But beauty in nature is not ultimate. It is the herald of inward and eternal beauty, and is not alone a solid and satisfactory good. It must stand as a part, and not as yet the last or highest expression of the final cause of Nature.

@ashleyvvv It’s getting late here. I’m going to chew on these and answer you tommorrow. I love this stuff.

ashleyvvv's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe darn my thing is due tomorrow but thanks!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@ashleyvvv OK more effort.

Earthgirl's avatar

ashleyvvv Thank you for bringing this up tonight! I have found a lecture on truth , beauty and goodness that, like Adirondackwannabe I need some time to “chew on”!

Get back to you tomorrow. Maybe you want to read it too? Here it is:

Emerson loved nature. I agree with him. Nature is pure and lovely. If you can’t appreciate the beauty of nature you’re not not letting it into your soul. And nature can be cruel as well.
Does that help at all?

@ashleyvvv One of my favorite views is standing on top of Whiteface Mtn, I feel very small. but the views around me are unbelieveable. It cut’s through to the core of me, and I know how He must have felt.

It means your deed gives you ownership over a specific piece of land, but no one own the view of the landscape/horizon.
