I want to know everything you know about what it's like living in Flagstaff, Arizona!

I, LOVE, THE DESERT. I live in Colorado right now and while that is nice being around high desert and the mountains are beautiful, I am really more of a desert person. I fucking love southern Utah and Arizona and would be there all the time if I could. For the past year I have toyed with the notion of moving into the midst of it. However there aren’t very many towns in the areas of Utah that I like that I would ever want to live in. Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona are both smack dab in the middle of where I want to be, but the towns are touristy and really not happenin at all. And, being young, I would like a place where I could still go out, go to shows, and most importantly enjoy nature.

I know that Flagstaff is not really in the desert and it’s more in the mountains of northern Arizona, but it’s still much closer to the places that I want to be close to than I currently am . I have been several times and it seems like a really cool and “hip” place. I do not care that it is especially hip, but there were a lot of young people which is something I dig, and it seems pretty artsy and whatever. I just don’t know very much about the place, the weather specifically is something I’m interested in. Is there much diversity? I currently live in a place with almost only white people and you can’t go out to a club and hear anything but dubstep. It makes me kinda lose faith in humanity.

Anyhow, give it to me!

I only know two people from Arizona and I’ve heard a few things:

The heat is different from the southeast or North. It is really dry heat, like opening an oven.

They recommend window tinting for cars to help deal with constantly having a hot car.

Always pay special attention to the AC in your car and house. We don’t have to care much about AC in the North, but down there it’s important to upkeep the AC and make sure it’s always working properly.

Just like every place, there are good and bad areas. Some areas are still full of wild west cowboy types, as well as “ghettos” and college towns.

Winters are WINTERS, 7 to 10 foot of snow.
Dry and sunny in summer.
Desert is a couple of hours drive south.
Route 66 goes through town.

@Blackberry Your first three sound very much like Colorado too. I am not at all a fan of the dry heat, so that sucks, but if you’re gonna be in a desert I guess you have to expect it.

Ensure that you at least have a passport, if not a proof of US citizenship, before you move there.

We live in the greater Phoenix metro suburbs so Flagstaff is a getaway place for us. It’s as much as15 degrees cooler in the summer, it gets some snow, has a good college crowd and has a good deal to offer people who enjoy hiking, camping, ballooning, ATV’s, horseback riding and small town art scenes. Do you need a job or are you an incoming student? There’s not a lot for work out there aside from retail.

@Neizvestnaya Considering school there, but most likely will just be working. I assume getting a job there, since its collegey, is a lot like getting a job here in Boulder. Very competitive and your only chance essentially is restaurants, but thats cool with me.

Yes @deni, mostly restaurants with bars in the immediate town but there are motels/hotels a little farther out where students take jobs because of flexible shifts.

Have you considered Santa Fe or Albuquerque?

I don’t know a lot about them, but I would look into New Mexico, too.

I lived there for a year when I was 3. I remember mountains and snow, but that’s about it. I obviously didn’t get a chance to experience the nightlife. ;)

My sister lived in Sedona for many years and they often visited Flagstaff to get away from the heat. My niece and nephew would also go into Flagstaff because the nightlife there was much more happening than Sedona’s. Flagstaff is definitely close enough to the desert to get your fix.

I do know of a jelly who knows a little bit more about the scene there, I think. I’ll send this Q to her.

@jaytkay No, only because I have never spent much time in either of them, but I will now! Thanks!
